I'm going to say it, one of the best shows on TV right now for genre flair. Next to ST Disco, its my favorite thing right now. That show fires on all cylinders and delivers week after week which is impressive. Even episodes that might be "filler" are exceptional.
I agree. It's not flawless, but the way this show subverts expectations time and again is so exciting to watch. I'm a big fantasy fan which means I'll watch and enjoy pretty much anything, but even I can admit a lot of it gets stale and repetitive. With The Magicians, I never get the feeling that they're slacking.
I quit ST Disco in s1 because the Klingon plot dragged, do you think it improves significantly?
Season 2 is almost 0 Klingon plot so imo yes its much better. Season 1 suffered from lack of connection between characters and season 2 is more about establishing the relationships and just overall better in my opinion. If you enjoyed the characters from season 1 but didn't feel the Klingon plot, I'd give season 2 a chance. Its not perfect but really enjoyable to me.
Maybe a little basic knowledge of the characters from the original series, but you could just skim the Wikipedia article and that would be sufficient. Like, there is a connection to Spock, for instance.
Most of the Trek fans find it to be not their Trek which is odd to me so it might be better going in with no prior knowledge of Trek. There are lots of callbacks to the old series but I don't think its something that would interfere with watching because they are just easter eggs in my opinion.
