Tim Burton's latest, the very sanitized (and boring) live-action adaptation of 'Dumbo' kicked off this weekend's box office with $2.6M from Thursday night previews. Disney's expecting its ( Read more... )

This was gonna bomb like I've been saying for months. And with such a high budget (higher than Captain Marvel, wtf??)
I never watched the original and I have no desire to watch this one, either.

when i was picking tickets for it yesterday almost all the screenings were half-empty (or less) and i live in NYC. so... $50m sounds like a high expectation to me, to be honest.

Deadline Hollywood is so it could be in the 40s.

I tend to think even that is going to be generous.

What is the budget for Dumbo? I am seeing a bunch of different numbers, but is it around $170mil? So like ~$20mil more than Captain Marvel? (Per this: https://comicbook.com/marvel/2019/03/28/disney-dumbo-budget-cost-more-marvels-captain-marvel-ant-man-wasp/... )

I've only seen the trailer to Dumbo, but the CGI seemed fairly hyper realistic to me and at least well-meshed with the live-action in the preview + plus a good portion of the main cast and Burton can/still command decent salaries, I imagine, so I guess I'm not massively surprised at the budget? I don't know how much the Fury/Coulson de-aging CGI stuff in Capt Marvel ran, but honestly, a lot of that felt like makeup to me more than serious CGI for the entire movie (not like what they did with de-aging RDJ for that short flashback in...Winter Soldier? Idr) Otherwise, the CM CGI seemed fairly standard Marvel.

The point is that this one the least popular originals that got a live-action remake, so although so the budget should have definitely been kept in check. It will be lucky to break-even with Shazam coming next weekend.

And lol, my original Google search threw up 950,000 USD for the Dumbo budget

That's the budget for the original, lol

Wasn't there some movie recently that didn't do well in the US at all for its budget, but did ( ... )

Dumbo is probably more popular with an older generation than is typically on ONTD (like, maybe around Burton's age), but I dunno know if they will go out and see it in the theater in droves. I don't really envision that, unless they want to totally stick it to their kids and take their grandkids to see it, get them some ice cream afterwards, take them back home immediately and leave their adult kids with any kiddo emotional fallout. But I can't say I'd really feel bad if Disney lost money on this.

LMAO @ myself. Google even helpfully put the original 1941 poster on the far side of the info box. XD Still think Google is dropping the ball, especially with reverse image search these days.
