ONTD Original: Five Podcasts You Might Not Have Heard of, But Will Probably Love!

Mar 24, 2019 14:52

We are living in an age where everyone and their grandmother currently has a podcast. While this abundance of content is great for shift workers, those with long commutes, and the perpetually bored - it also means that a lot of gems can get lost in the over saturated sea of internet based entertainment.

Below I've listed five podcasts that you might not be aware of but that you'll probably enjoy. I've left out major podcasts that are constantly making the top charts and that you've almost certainly already heard of if you listen to podcasts regularly (e.g. WTF with Marc Maron, Who Weekly, True Crime Podcasts, anything from NPR, etc). Check out the list below!

1. David Tennant Does a Podcast With...
Did you guys know that David Tennant has a podcast!? Because I sure didn't! Started in January of this year, David Tennant interviews celebrity guests including Olivia Colman, Sir Ian McKellen, Whoopi Goldberg, Jodie Whittaker and more (future episodes will feature Samantha Bee, Kristen Ritter, and Michael Sheen). His soothing voice is perfect for podcasting and the lineup of celebrity guests is excellent. You can find a full list of episodes here and can follow the podcast on twitter and instagram!

Happy birthday to our first ever podcast guest, Olivia Colman!

However, for a while, Wikipedia had Olivia's birthday wrong, and correcting it is harder than you think... pic.twitter.com/tw0w8p3ePL

2. Nocturne
Are you a night owl? Does the late night enthral you or terrify you? Or is what most people consider the late night actually your morning? Either way, Nocturne is just about that - night time and everything it encompasses. From the Norwegian city plunged in darkness for two months a year, to the creative power of night time poets, to the people delivering food in NYC after the sun goes down. You can listen to full episodes here.

If you're not sure where to start, check out "Vampire Beat" that features an interview with Jade Walker - a journalist that has been the overnight editor for news organizations like the New York Times, The Associated Press, and Yahoo! News as well as The Huffington Post. Listen to her talk about what it's like to be following news all over the world at 3am to make sure that news sites are up to date when major events happen.

3. The Allusionist

The Allusionist is a podcast all about language. It covers the history of words, how we use certain words today, and fascinating stories about how language evolves throughout pop culture plus so much more. Since ONTD is a gossip blog, check out Episode 93 which is all about the word gossip (I promise, if you don't know the etymology of the word, it will 100% surprise you!):

New episode! I found the etymology of the word ‘gossip’ very surprising and its more recent evolution rather depressing. But also very interesting! @LaineyGossip and @annehelen explain why gossip is smart, useful and important. https://t.co/dOIVsgekqV

4. The Tip Off
Our world is a fucking mess right now, from politics to climate change to income inequality, and journalists have never seemed more important than right now. The Tip Off interviews journalists responsible for some excellent recent examples of investigative journalism so that the public can get a sense of what their jobs often entail - including how they get their leads, the dead-ends they run into, and, of course, the tip offs they receive. You can find all the episodes on iTunes.

NEW: @CNN's @afantz is used to covering press conferences. But one day she attended a meeting that would change everything, and set her on a long and winding journey to reveal how and when police were destroying vital evidence https://t.co/cJGSdeiyBk

5. Sooo Many White Guys
Hosted by Phoebe Robinson (of 2 Dope Queens podcast fame), Sooo Many White Guys aims to interview interesting people that (mostly) aren't white men. Guests include Issa Rae, Jameela Jamil, Hannibal Burress, Awkwafina, and Constance Wu among many others.

Hi Q Hi! Guess what?! #SoooManyWhiteGuys is back, y’all! Check out the seas four premiere with actress and activist @jameelajamil! We talk about her career, life positivity, toxic paparazzi, & her bouncing back from a traumatic accident: https://t.co/R9n5zusV0Z pic.twitter.com/pVY1bXd0l7
