even if he doesn't technically handle the rights any more, I feel like the estate is still kind of waiting for Christopher to pass before they strike any film deals for non-LOTR/Hobbit stuff tbh :/

but yesss, the Silmarillion would be so awesome as an anthology show. you could get a season out of Fëanor drama and another out of Beren and Luthien easy.

girl, I've figured out a whole seven season plan out of sheer boredom. it brings in some of the additional materials about the First Age, because some stories I just want.

also, it has to have Howard Shore doing music. the whole world is created out of music, the leitmotifs repeat thru the Ages, it's a necessity.

yessss. I would love for Howard Shore to take a crack at composing music for Ainulindalë even though I have no idea how the hell a mainstream big-budget movie or show would even attempt that onscreen lol.

but leitmotives/pseudo-Wagner are built into the DNA of Middle-Earth and there should def. be musical continuity. I hope Amazon hires Shore to create some themes for this at least (even though I obvs don't expect him to do all the work on every single episode) since there are some indications they want this to feel continuous with the Peter Jackson movies.

How much Númenor stuff are they allowed to use? That could be a baller TV show if fleshed out but I can't remember how much of it past the family trees is actually covered in the LOTR appendices and how much of the actual story is presumably stuck w/ the rights to the Silmarillion that they don't have.

I wonder if the Unfinished Tales also falls under Silmarillion rights, that's the only other source they could draw from for this iirc

I wanna say that they ONLY have the rights to stuff that's in LOTR/The Hobbit since that's what was sold off in the 70s.

But yeah, the whole Second Age is like, three pages in the appendices, I'm looking at them rn. They do somewhat read like an in-universe Wikipedia page for the Silmarillion so they mightttt be able to hack it but it def. feels like a very "letter of the law" way around it to me. I want a whole season on Ar-Pharazon and yung Sauron drama but they'd have to pull that from like three paragraphs.

I bet that they'll start in Númenor but go into the start of the Third Age, founding Gondor + Isildur drama p. quickly since there's a lot more on that for them to pull from that they indisputably can use.

Yeah, I feel like they might take the fall of Númenor as a starting point and the war, and then the making of the rings, and then maybe the loss of the kingdom of Anor? That's all in the appendices and it would draw people in who have only seen the movies.

So they'll manage to use a load of poc extras as bad guys and aim for diversity points that way, got it. I wanted to suggest to make all nine human kings poc, but erm - yeah, stepped into that one.

I'm angry that it's Amazon of all companies because I will always be excited about Lord of the Rings stuff but not a penny to Bezos, so this hobbit will have to ring it with slightly legal ways to watch it.

Comments like these are always so funny to me. You're not standing by any principles by still watching it, illegally or not. You're still supporting it. You're still sharing your thoughts about it thereby amplifying the product
