How does this season compare to first season?

They hit a lot of the same notes in a different way. It’s like when someone writes a song in one genre and a musician from another genre covers it.

There are fewer gratuitous sex scenes, and I really appreciate that.

The story is just as good but it's not as pretentious.

I think it's better overall, I feel like part of the allure of S1 (which was admittedly amazing) was that it was so heavy on the mystique and Cohle's abstract musings on existence etc whereas this is just as absorbing without all that propping it up and with (imho) superior performances

I think it's about equal, though, I'd probably give the edge to Season 1. I think the case in the first season was more eventful/intriguing. This case feels both scant and rushed. Acting-wise, it's just as good, though I wish we'd had less of the interview/reporter scenes and more of the other actor in the present timeline. I think the dysfunction of Marty and Cohle and how their personalities/issues with each other are revealed/grow was great. However, with the story being told primarily from Hayes viewpoint (whereas Season 1 had both Marty and Cohle as mains), the relationship is a bit one-sided and incomplete, especially with present-Hayes memory-loss being so abundant and present-Roland popping up so late in the season ( ... )
