I'm glad critics seem to love it, especially the obsessive TD fans. I was afraid they would trash this season without giving it a chance.
IA with the subtle race refrences, I think it has a lot to do with Mahershala. I remember him saying he stressed to the writers that they didn't have to be over the top while acknowledging race. It can be subtle looks and comments from the yt characters around him, that can show viewers what he's dealing with.
ia the way wayne’s blackness is addressed is pretty great. last weekend [Spoiler (click to open)] he sounded genuinely heartbroken telling roland to say the word he was thinking
that is one of my favorite scenes :( He looked so defeated.
My other favorite scene from that episode was when Wayne apologized to Roland for the Tom thing. Roland looked so surprised (that he remembered what he was apologizing for) and grateful that he meant what he said.
fr roland really was surprised I liked that part too. it’s the disease, alzheimer’s patients just bring up ancient history out of the blue but it was v touching
while i agree on the storytelling being quite spot on regarding racial issues, the case itself seems so random and dare i say basic for detectives to be obsessing over for three decades. and i didn't appreciate that they tried to haphazardly tie it in with the first season without any nuances. idk, i like it...it's infinitely better than that hot mess of a second season, but most of the time i found myself not even caring about the case and that missing kid. they should have broadened the mystery and the investigation itself but there's only so much time when you have social injustice, dementia and marital dynamics taking up most of the show. first season was a perfect balance between every plot point.
and while i enjoy both mahershala and stephen's performances, they have zero chemistry together. carmen and mahershala on the other hand are incredible together. the focus should have been on the two of them.

On the bright side, at least we can marathon it now?
