https://instagram.com/p/BtE-AOCgTRG Richard Armitage and Riley Keough showed up at Sundance 2019 to promote their film The Lodge, directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz. In today's Sundance Roundup, I have pictures, reviews and non-spoilery review recaps from several women-directed films that have premiered over the past few days. You can check out yesterday's recap if you missed it, as well as individual posts for Native Son and Late Night.
THE LODGE - Bone chilling slow burn - echoes of last year's HEREDITARY are there, but this uniquely morbid family drama with religious furor maintains a precision that would make Hitch and Kubrick proud. Exceptional pacing, a frigid bit of horror that's top notch #Sundance - Jason Gorber #Sundance🎥🏔️ (@filmfest_ca) January 26, 2019
What the critics are saying: Reviews seem pretty split to positive on this midnight premiere, a horror film from the directors of Goodnight Mommy about a woman snowed-in with her soon-to-be stepchildren. Some critics call it a nail-biter with a meaty role for lead Riley Keogh, while others say that the set-up is great but the scares begin to ring hollow. I saw more than one comparison to Hereditary in the twitter reactions.
Joanna Hogg's gorgeous THE SOUVENIR, which just premiered at Sundance, tore out my heart with the most delicate of wrenches. If Tom Burke isn't on my Best Actor list at year's end, I'll start wearing a hat so I can eat it. My review: https://t.co/3udgQNyXy7 - Guy Lodge (@GuyLodge) January 28, 2019
Happy to report that Joanna Hogg’s A Souvenir, which premiered at Sundance last night, flattened me like a velvet steamroller. Here’s my first five-star review of 2019: https://t.co/slRHA6domd#SundanceFilmFestival2019 - Robbie Collin (@robbiereviews) January 28, 2019
What the critics are saying: The reviews for The Souvenir, Joanna Hogg's fictionalized romantic memoir set in the 1980's, are excellent across the board. Critics fell in love with leads Honor Swinton-Byrne (daughter of Tilda, who costars in the film) and Tom Burke, and call it "deeply personal" and "exquistitely reflective". A24 has already snapped up production rights, with plans for a sequel with Robert Pattinson in the works.
Loved the visual design/premise of PARADISE HILLS, an anti-conformist, feminist SF/fantasy that blends THE PRISONER, STEPFORD WIVES, and HUNGER GAMES. The storytelling's very lurch-y, and the messages too underlined, but I could stare at those images for hours. #Sundance19 - Noel Murray (@NoelMu) January 27, 2019
PARADISE HILLS is very silly, kind of fun to look at, gets way too bogged down in explaining its Twilight Zone-y premise, and eventually made me sleepy. But I'd give that director (Alice Waddington) a big budget and see what she does with it - David Sims (@davidlsims) January 27, 2019
What the critics are saying: For the most part, reviewers are loving the concept and visual design of the "bonkers" Paradise Hills, a film about a mysterious boarding school that reforms wayward girls. This is director Alice Waddington's first feature, and reviewers note that she has a clear vision of what she wants to achieve with this female-driven fantasy film, but some are less than convinced that she's successful in its overall execution.
GREENER GRASS: just what I needed after so many dark films. Wonderfully weird and absolutely hilarious. Co-directors/writers/stars Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe have a style that references many things but is completely their own. I laughed a lot! #Sundance19pic.twitter.com/hu5n4i04N8 - Alicia Malone (@aliciamalone) January 28, 2019
My favorite thing ever is when I miss out on a movie I wanted to see - the Ted Bundy film - and then decide to just walk in on a movie I haven’t even heard of... and it becomes my favorite film of #Sundance. #GreenerGrass is unclassifiable, entirely original, and so, so funny. - Christian Blauvelt (@ctblauvelt) January 28, 2019
What the critics are saying: Reviewers are keen on this absurdist comedy about suburban moms from director Dawn Luebbe, calling it original, weird and hilarious. Writer Jocelyn DeBoer and star Mary Holland are both Upright Citizens Brigade vets, and the cast is made up of many more actor-comedians, like The Good Place's D'Arcy Carden and SNL's Beck Bennett.
Fresh off their purchase of Mindy Kaling's well-reviewed Sundance premiere Late Night, Amazon bought the Scott Burns directed drama The Report for $14 million.
