January 27, 2019 We're t-minus five hours before the SAG awards take place in LA tonight, and Variety gave their predictions of what should and will win in both TV and film categories. Sad reminder that SAG-AFTRA and AMPAS have a huge overlap of voters, so almost always tonight's winner will determine the Oscar actors' wins (almost, but not always).
For Film:
-- Best Actress is slowly becoming a lock for Glenn Close for 'The Wife' so expect a win here (though they say Olivia Colman could be a surprise win). Best Actor unfortunately is between Rami Malek and Christian Bale for their terrible movies, and they're giving the edge to Malek for 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
-- Best Supporting Actress is going to be the most interesting one, since SAG's full of idiots who didn't even nominate frontrunner Regina King. Variety's giving Amy Adams the edge for 'Vice' (she might actually be a two-time winner, if she gets TV-Movie Actress for 'Sharp Objects'), which is a fucking shame. Mahershala Ali's a lock for Best Supporting Actor all through this season for 'Green Book'.
-- Variety's take on Best Film Ensemble (usually a WTF of wins as history as shown) is curious. They're vetting 'Bohemian Rhapsody' against 'Black Panther', and giving the latter the edge. Seems like 'A Star is Born' is pretty much DOA for now.
For TV:
-- OK, I never care about TV during this awards season, but they've got Jason Bateman against Sterling K. Brown for Drama Actor, with the former getting the win for 'The Ozark'. Sandra Oh is expected to get the Drama Actress prize for 'Killing Eve'.
-- Ugh, so whatever crack-related reason, Variety's listed Michael Douglas to win Comedy Actor for 'The Kominsky Method' (why, is the category THIS weak???). Rachel Brosnahan will continue her sweep for Comedy Actress for 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' (which should also get comedy ensemble).
-- 'This is Us', beloved by SAG-AFTRA, is expected to take Drama Ensemble.
