HBO's long time in the planning Perry Mason drama is officially moving forward.

The Americans Matthew Rhys is to star in the limited series, taking over the title role from Robert Downey Jr who will remain with the project as an executive producer.

RDJ had been attached to star in Perry Mason reboot that was originally planned as a feature film.

HBO started development in August 2016.

Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, HBO's incartion of Perry Mason is a low-rent private investigator living check-to-check & is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and dealing with a broken marriage.
