They are right. Kevin's joke was not a joke at all. He just said he would hit his son if he were gay. There is nothing funny about that. A stepfather was arrested not that long ago in LA for killing his gay stepson.

And most of his tweets where he was using the slur weren't attempts at jokes at all.
