So I saw this in theaters and the woman next to me was this star of a middle-aged lady wearing rhinestone flip-flops who -- I'm pretty sure -- had never seen a moving picture before and would gasp at literally everything, or chuckle nervously to herself.

As a result, I spent more time trying to figure out what she was reacting to than watching the movie, so --

Can someone explain what the point of Vanessa Kirby's character was? Like she was mega hot and I dug it, but I felt like she showed up, looked sexy, threw a knife and then... disappeared?

she was a weapons dealer and like a black market broker? i think. she's the one who "Lark" wants to buy the nuclear weapons from/through.

Ah okay. So she might be set up as a future villain?

i can def see her sticking around as a shady underworld contact. i think they said she had been working with the cia in the past as well. [Spoiler (click to open)]and like the comment below, since she's the daughter of Max (another underworld broker in MI:1 which was a kinda cool throwback) and they didn't kill her, it seems likely. also reports say that cruise is always trying to get previous mission's cast back for sequels so i'm hopeful. i really like kirby so i hope so.

I think she was originally supposed to be one of the villains and fight Rebecca Ferguson at the end of the movie, but they couldn't think of a decent reason why she would be there so they cut that part out.

I wish she had more to do, but they come up with the action set pieces and then write the script as they go along and because of that her character was sacrificed.

That definitely makes more sense. Oh well. I thought the end in general felt a little lame, apart from the plane fight.
