People are upset the lead in “The Curse of La Llorona” is a white woman playing a Latina character
Yesterday, the teaser trailer for “The Curse of La Llorona” was released.
Based on the Mexican folklore (and may vary throughout Latin America), it is said that La Llorona (translated “The Weeping Woman”) is the story of a mother who in a fit of rage drowns her two children. Realizing what she has just done, she jumps into the river and kills herself. Her ghost then spends eternity searching for her children alongside the river.
If you aren’t familiar with the full tale, read here and get yourself familiar with a Leyenda. Latinos everywhere were frightened growing up with La Llorona and El Cucuy lurking anytime we misbehaved tbqh.
Naturally, Linda Cardellini (an Irish-Italian woman) playing Anna Garcia as the lead and playing a Latina in an almost all Latino cast didn’t sit well with Twitter.

1. I love @creepypuppet and the movies produced within and around the wan-verse umbrella.
2. the film is directed by a Latino and has a lot of Latinx in the cast

A movie that was clearly inspired by the folklore and yet was able to take more liberties due to not being explicitly named “La Llorona” was Mama. It will be interesting to see which is better.

I think it will be good, I'm more worried about it having a white lead actor in it considering the content, making POC who identify with the cultural source unhappy, which is unfortunate for Linda Cardellini because she's great.

I’m tired of White Hollywood writing movies about our stories and our myths and our backgrounds, but they keep casting us as the maids and the gardeners and the slaves. They couldn’t even cast a Latina actress to take the lead role in the new film #LaLlorona.
