- The film is set during the 1970 Miss World pageant
- The 1970 pageant was marked with controversy and protest when the show allowed South Africa to send two women (one black and one white) and feminists crashed the broadcast throwing flour bombs and heckling host Bob Hope
- It was also the first time a black woman won the contest, with Jennifer Hosten as Miss Grenada taking the top prize and the black Miss South Africa coming in second with many people believing Miss Sweden had been robbed
- Mbatha-Raw is presumed to be playing Miss Grenada
- BAFTA winning director Phillipa Lowthorpe is directing
