"A Discovery of Witches" Episode 3 Review: Sexual Tension & Awkward Dialog

Sep 29, 2018 08:43

We're already 3 episodes into the glorious trash that is A Discovery of Witches, and despite the uncomfortable similarities to Twlight (lead female smells too good, vampires go hunting for wild animals) most reviewers remain cautiously optimistic about the series that really should've just been dumped on Netflix for a good guilty Summer binge*.

Den of Geek's Aliya Whiteley registers a few minor gripes, including the fact that Matthew Goode's old-as-balls vampire, Matthew, got possessive and controlling when she had hoped the series would buck this particular trope.

That said, given that he opened the series by stalking her and inhaling her sweater so he could further track her scent, this doesn't feel exactly out of left field.

She also raises concern that the use of "Go Your Own Way" at the end is ironic given that the strong, intelligent lead female is literally being forced to leave her home by some guy she just met who repeatedly states that he "craves" her in a way that's intentionally sexual and deadly.

I'm more concerned that it was corny.

Either way, Whiteley thinks the show is working with just enough interesting lore and premise to keep her going, and I'm in the same boat.

Also, given how implausible Diana Bishop's character is, I'm surprised at how quickly Teresa Palmer has won me over. I also want her full wardrobe.

Is anyone else watching and grateful that 'magic yoga' was cut from the books?

There's no preview for episode 4 yet.
