I've been wanting to watch Luca Guadagnino's other films before Suspiria comes out in October. So earlier this week, we watched I Am Love, which I liked despite the melodrama, and last night, we watched A Bigger Splash, which I loved because of the melodrama. Dakota Johnson isn't quite on Tilda Swinton's level, but she held her own, Ralph Fiennes spent a goodly portion of the film stark naked, and Tilda barely talks and still commands the viewer's attention in every shot. I really get why those two + CMBYN are called the Desire trilogy - in each film, there are gorgeous places, pools, beautiful shots of food, rich people problems, nudity, and sumptuous wide shots of nature.

I don't think Suspiria's gonna fit in with those three in quite the same way, but I am really looking forward to it now that I'm more familiar with Luca's other work. I need to do this with more directors - watch a bunch of their films at once. You pick up on a lot of signatures that way.

I've done that with actors but never managed to watch everything in their filmography lol. One of the actors was Nicole Kidman and it really made me appreciate her and her film choices. Her filmography is so varied and great.

Damn, she's a great choice for that, her filmography is enormous! And you're right, she's played all kinds of different roles.

I love that you did this! Guadagnino is such a distinctive director and makes each film his own. If you haven't seen his earlier work yet (The Protagonists also with Swinton! and Melissa P), I would suggest doing that too - they're not yet at the level of post-I am Love, but you can still see how his artistic technique began to develop.

Ooh, thank you for the recs; I saw them on his IMDB and wasn't sure if they were worth watching or not. That's good to know!

i was obsessed with wong kar-wai as a student (cliche lol) but it's funny how different his films seem to me after he fell out with his DOP. there's still that melancholy and lyrical, gnomic quality but the punk rock energy that so attracted me to his 90s work with Christopher Doyle is just... gone.
of course, he's a lot older too now, might have something to do with it.

A Bigger Splash is so good (even though it's basically just luca's audition tape for the Suspiria remake lmao)

i know a lot of people take issue with the last quarter but it totally works for me
