I hope Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie get some indie award noms for Leave No Trace. They're two of my favorite performances so far this year.

Elsie Fisher? Not that I've seen it yet bc my country is a hole but I'd be surprised if she didn't win any breakout awards.

ah true, she might get recognized too. she was quite good, but i think thom and john david were better as breakouts

I agree about JDW, I thought he was great and definitely better than Adam Driver who I generally like but was pretty unremarkable in the film (not that he would be up for breakout awards but he keeps being mentioned in the supporting actor race and it's confusing me and proving how barren it is). You already know how I feel about Thomasin lol, she was good but the accent ruined it for me, I'm more excited to see what she does next. I really want to watch Leave No Trace again though, I think I might have undervalued it the first time.

What are the requirements for breakout awards anyway? Like would Alex Woolf be eligible for Hereditary?

yeah i think thomasin has great potential but of course she'll get better with time and more work (and she's got so much lined up for next year anyway). i was baffled by the love adam was getting too because it's like... anyone could've played that role. i know praise was being throne at topher grace as well but i was hoping for a juicier role and just wasn't wowed either

nah, alex was one of the leads in jumanji just last year, 'hereditary's not a breakout for him. they'd have to toss him straight into supporting

Yup I was whelmed by Topher Grace too. Plus the optics of two white guys being the only actors considered for BlacKkKlansman are not great.

Could he really be called a lead in Jumanji? The actual kids were only in the film for like 10 minutes at the beginning and end, it's not like that's the role that got people talking about him. Idk exactly what the requirements are, but I would definitely say Hereditary is his breakout.

people have known about alex (and his brother) for years, so they're not coming out of nowhere and getting huge roles. sure he didn't have a lead role but it was big enough that people noticed him.

breakouts are usually for actors who are INSANELY obscure or no one's heard of, and then they have this huge ass performance that you're like wtf (like chalamet last year, and lucas hedges the year before that). the jumanji role negates that since it made so much damn money lmao and it's still a prominent enough role

Well that sucks. He was great in Hereditary and even though supp. actor is barren as hell, I still don't think he'll get nominated. Hereditary is probably gonna end up with nothing and I'm nhf that.

Surely Gaga would also not be eligible then, if she's already won a Golden Globe for acting?

i think if a24 pushes it the right way it's totally possible. the only problem with 'hereditary' as a whole is that it's a horror movie and the academy hates genre films lmao.

supporting actor is always barren as fuck, and if you look at gold derby there's already one very clear front runner. at this point it's just a matter of which four actors are filling in the spots to lose to timothee chalamet this year

hmm, dunno. her win was for TV and the breakout is for film? kind of not sure if she'd be eligible or not to be honest.

Do you really think Timothee is going to win? He's starting to look more and more like the lone nominee for BB and that 64 Metascore is rough. I think it'll probably go up a bit with its release but I can't imagine a newcomer, and a young guy to boot, winning for a film with such a lukewarm reception, even if he does have a previous nod.

those reviews for him specifically were through the roof, the movie's critiques notwithstanding. there have been lots of cases in the past of incredible performances winning from mediocre movies (julianne moore, meryl streep, halle berry, for example)

i wouldn't rule those against him. i mean it's WAY too early to say that he'll win, but he's the very early front runner right now.

Timo ain't no Julianne Moore or Meryl Streep though. Idk I just don't trust the Academy to give it to him after last year's mess, even if the performance is that good.

Same but I feel like Thomasin is most likely just going to get a bunch of young performer awards which is a shame bc she was incredible in Leave No Trace. Maybe next year for JoJo Rabbit she might get included in the main catergories.

I'm so curious about what Jojo Rabbit is going to turn out to be.

I read the script and I thought it was really really good but it’s definitely the type of film that’s either going to be an amazing satire or a horrendous mess.
