After the Academy throwing all their love at young, up-and-coming actresses for the last few years, I'm ready for a lead actress race filled with Glenn Close, Nicole Kidman, Viola Davis, Toni Collette and Olivia Colman (if she goes lead).

Finally, an interesting and actually competitive race.

i think olivia's going supporting, so maybe rachel in lead?

I don't think anyone can decide who the lead is. It seems like the three of them have pretty equal roles, but obviously they're not all going to get into supporting so someone has to be category-frauded into lead. Gold Derby has Olivia in lead though.

Hold the fuck up, Rachel Weisz is 48?? Why did I think she was in her late 30's? She looks amazing.

does gaga count as young/up-and-coming? she's gonna be working HARD for that nom and honestly I think there's a half-decent shot she gets it lol

I honestly have no idea which way it's gonna go with her. Assuming the consensus is that she's actually good enough for a nod, I don't know if the Academy is going to embrace her or not. This is the year of the "popular film" Oscar after all, so we'll see I guess.

If it racks up a lot of nominations in general - which seems reasonably likely, although obvs it's still v early - I think the ASIB rising tide can lift up the Gaga Best Actress nod boat tbh. AMPAS historically loves musicals & showbiz movies, she's gotten unreservedly good reviews so far, and you know that she is going to show up to every single screening/luncheon/etc. she gets invited to.

if we're just talking nominations, honestly I think she's likelier than Toni Colette at least. Possibly Viola (if Widows isn't going to be campaigned hard) and even maybe Nicole (depending on if she pushes harder for BA in Destroyer or Best Supporting in Boy Erased).

Buttttt I can also see a season where Gaga wins the Actress Musical/Comedy Globe but only gets in for a song nom at the Oscars lol

Oh yeah, I definitely think the possibility of her nomination is riding on the overall success of the film. It's not like she would ever be able to coast in on a lone nod situation like a lot of other actresses have.

I would love for Toni Collette to get nominated but I don't know if it's really going to happen either. I think A24 is going to struggle to get a lot of Academy members to even watch the film, it's pretty out-there, even by their newer standards. And I'm still really unsure about where Widows is going to end up. It looks amazing, but for some reason I can't see it being much of an awards player, it just seems a bit more commercial to me. I have a feeling it might be this year's Gone Girl.
