August 14, 2018 Along with a new single, artist and musician Rina Sawayama is 'out now' and announced that she's a member of the queer community in an
Instagram post captioned "here's me coming out as a queer jaPANese cherry blossom !" with emphasis on 'pan'. She explains further on her experience in an interview with Broadly;
- Studying politics, sociology, and psychology at Cambridge University, and experience of being bullied + marginalized at school to the point of being suicidally depressed
- Knowing she liked girls at a young age
- Her and musician Yaeji discussed what it's like to be queer and Asian in the industry, and how Rina wants to be a representation of both instead of exclusively one or the other
- Says 🌸"Cherry"🌸 is her most personal song yet
- Talks about the single release and biphobia: "the biphobia was real in me. I was like, Why are you doing this? You don’t need to do this… It was just like, No, I need to get the story out there. I just need to get myself out there and not worry. Because a lot of these people must be going through these feelings."
