There’s just one Blockbuster left in America.
@justinheckert traveled to the last three in Alaska on the eve of their closing to explore the end of an iconic part of cultural memories:

July 19, 2018 * writer travels to Alaska to document the closing of a culture icon
* each of the managers of the last 3 Alaskan Blockbusters had worked there for at least 10 years
* the owner of these stores claimed they lasted as long as they did because they didn't do business exactly the way Blockbusters in the Lower 48 did. The two biggest examples being NOT ending late fees and marking down rentals as low as they could go and still make a profit.
* residents in Soldotna expressed worry over how they would pass the time during winter. For those who do have internet access, it isn't fast enough to smoothly stream.
* a 7 year old started crying in the store because she would miss her Friday ritual of getting pizza and a movie.
* no word on what happens to the Russell Crowe memorabilia John Oliver donated
* there is only one Blockbuster left in the United States, and it's located in Bend, OR.
SOURCE I hate the way this is written (very flowery) but I thought the content was pretty interesting.
