Indie Film Release Guide: June 22nd [An ONTD Original]

This is the second underwhelming week of indie movie releases in a row, which is a shame because I am really not here for Jurassic World: The Remix. Thankfully, I've still got a few indie releases from past weeks to catch up on, and I hope you do, too!

Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Damsel

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Western
Plot: It's the Wild West, circa 1870. Samuel Alabaster, an affluent pioneer, ventures across the American frontier to marry the love of his life, Penelope. As his group traverses the west, the once-simple journey grows treacherous, blurring the lines between hero, villain and damsel.
What you should know: Pattinson & Wasikowska previously starred in Maps to the Stars together.

Genre: Comedy, Drama
Plot: A woman at rock bottom must find her way across Los Angeles in order to crash her ex-boyfriend's engagement party.
What you should know: ONTD's new girlfriend apparently carries this otherwise mediocre film.

The King

Genre: Documentary
Storyline: Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, a musical road trip across America in his 1963 Rolls Royce explores how a country boy lost his authenticity and became a king while his country lost her democracy and became an empire.
What you should know: The director was nominated for a Golden Eye award at Cannes 2017.

The Catcher Was a Spy

Plot: A major league baseball player, Moe Berg, lives a double life working for the Office of Strategic Services.
What you should know: Based on the book by Nicholas Dawidoff

Genre: Comedy, Drama
Plot: Laura and her son Henry are forced to drive her estranged, pot-dealing, carefree father Jack across country after being kicked out of a nursing home.
What you should know: It’s Rated R for drug material, language, some sexual references and nude sketches, and that seems insufficient for an R rating if you ask me.

The Icarus Line Must Die

What you should know: It’s been nominated for and won several international film awards. Also, it’s in Portuguese.
