#Riverdale's @CamilaMendes on navigating fame, and why she's not slowing down anytime soon: https://t.co/SvhgTsmtRz pic.twitter.com/XHJmuFB0mh

-On auditioning for Riverdale: “I had the most harrowing audition process. They were like, ‘You’re our top choice, but we want to open up a new search, and we want someone that can compete with you. I lost sleep, I was crying every night because it felt like I was so close to something that could be big, and like my life and career changing, but in the end it all worked out.”

-On Veronica being Latina: “That choice made so much sense,” Mendes proudly stated. “I’m so happy…and it’s not just Veronica, it’s the whole Lodge family being all Latino…portraying Latinos as a strong, powerful, intelligent family,” she went on. “We do well, we’re go-getters.”

-On missing her Brazilian family: “I do really get sad because my entire extended family is in Brazil, and they’re all hanging out with each other every day and they have such a sense of family and community. I don’t get to see them very often and I feel left out, I feel like I don’t get to enjoy that big family feeling that they all get to enjoy because we have so much family there. They’re all having barbecues and constantly getting together, watching the kids grow up. It’s sad that I can’t be a part of that. When I was living there that was nice. Brazilians value family so much.”

-On getting to roles not typically offered to Latinas: “Being Latina, everyone is always going to want to be like ‘Fierce, sexy, strong, confident!’-which is great, I think that’s definitely a good type of personality to portray and it’s empowering-but Latinas can be the goofy, nerdy, quirky, vulnerable women that I think is usually associated with white girls.”

Vanessa, Ashleigh, Caity Lotz, and Candice Patton were at the PopSugar Playground event to talk about onscreen representation and their characters.

Ashleigh would like for the Pussycats to reunite and for the show to actually explore how the McCoys divorcing is affecting Josie: "I would love to see Josie really battle with the undoing of her household. She’s not three years old, so she’s going to remember the fact that her parents are getting divorced. The weight of a divorce, especially if the home is relatively happy or you have close relationships with your parents, often [times] undoes you. She’s going through puberty and seeing how the divorce is happening and her dad’s not around. I think that we could really lead into that and see what that turns her into because she’s always supposed to be the ‘good girl’, and she listens to her mom, and she never makes waves. I feel like this could create a wedge that would be really enjoyable to watch. I also would love to see her really find what her sound is. It could be great to see that happen through this pain. Unfortunately, some really great things come from dark, hurt places and often times it ends up healing you in the process, so I would love to see something like that go on with Josie"

Vanessa talked about how she was nervous about having to kiss Cole since she knew there'd be fans who wouldn't like it, but she's ultimately happy that it has lead to her character being with Cheryl partly since she's such close friends with Madelaine and mostly because it's good to have a bisexual biracial woman on primetime tv.
