shadowhunters (freeform), cancellation

so this technically makes sense to me, given the budget vs indicators of popularity, but what strikes me most about this cancellation is that there was no warning beforehand - like typically "on the bubble" shows get flagged as such so that there can be fan campaigns to save them. the ratings had never been a strong indicator since the $ for the show came from deals elsewhere (i.e., from netflix).

from what I've heard, none of the fan chatter suspected this was a possibility until this announcement. so, it seems kind of ... ruthless. idk. maybe netflix didn't give freeform any warning either. (it's not like they ever promoted the show to their users, so idk what they were expecting.)

maybe we're all just totally out of the loop on this...? hmm.

reading into THR's source it was 100% netflix's funding that made this show work, which is weird since it seems to have a large fandom, especially in the LGBT community? additionally, FF didn't really promo this (according to the twitter comments at the source). i didn't see ANY promo at SDCC for this, and they were still in one of the biggest ballrooms that the convention had. maybe nomorefrostbite is more informed than i am, but it does seem like a funding issue. FF should step up and cancel that fosters spinoff no one asked for to fund this

maybe the fosters spinoff is cheap as hell and that's why FF is pushing it forward. it just seems like poor long-term planning for branding, since there is no way that is going to 'take off'...lol.

Yep internationally the fandom is active and dedicated. There are a lotttt of shadowhunters cons all over europe now literally every damn five minutes, and the mains are always there, and they're always packed and sold out and massively popular.

Yeah like there was NOTHING even vaguely hinted about this, Kat and I think Alberto or someone (I only paid attention to Kat) were at a Freeform event just a day or two ago having fun and promoting.

And the show was confirmed as returning for 3B on August 13th.

So this is SUDDEN.

Like I keep very on top of all vague gossip and chatter in the fandom so I can make posts for the ONTD ShadowFam like a good dedicated OP, so when I got this notif from this noble OP I was like..... in bed about to settle down and HAD TO RUSH DOWNSTAIRS TO MY LAPTOP AND START COMMENTING IN SHOCK AND DISMAY cos this is a massive shock.

wow, that's pretty extreme and def worthy of shock, then.

I wonder if FF was bad at communicating with Netflix about expectations or something. Also, I'm out of my depth here, but if Netflix was so critical in funding it ... then why does it show up on Hulu? shouldn't its streaming have been restricted to Netflix? seems weird. I would be pissed if I were Netflix and a show I was pouring money into was accessible through my main competitor.

...but maybe that's normal? maybe Hulu was paying Netflix for the rights somehow? it doesn't feel normal. and now it's cancelled.

idk idk if it was Netflix domestically or Netflix International that was funding, because it played on Netflix outside the US territories.

They probably cancelled it over text message to FF and pumped the money into Crappy Netflix Movie Nobody Watches #50933904949

truth. omg I saw a listing of Best Netflix Movies (probably sent from here) - and it was just AWFUL. even the ones that were critically well-received were only kind of good (more boring than riveting). their TV show production >>> movie production, because at least some of their shows are genuinely entertaining, lol. mess.

What gets me is the shift of 3B. Like what the fuck.

I mean, it's basically S4 now. Like, if it were the UK where all seasons are like 8-12eps, that could be normal... but it's wild that they were just recently talking about when it was going to air. I don't think FF planned for this at alllll, which seems shortsighted of them.
