For those who don't know the story, Prince wrote the song "Nothing Compares 2 U" and gave the song to a band he had assembled called The Family. The song was not released as a single by them, so the song was barely heard of by the general public. It wasn't until 1990, when Sinead O'Connor released a cover, that the song became huge. so i saw something the other day that listed this as one of the songs white people should not cover... i'm now unsure if they were referring to the sinead o'connor version or not since no one has heard the prince version til now?

He performed it live a few times, I know that much. I remember after he died, seeing a tweet with video footage of him performing it but Idk when/where.

Now that I'm thinking of it, I have a weird distant memory of them playing his version on one of the local radio stations when he died. Who was phone tbh

sinead's version is absolute perfection from start to finish and infinitely better than the original. i'm sure even prince would agree.

sorry to reply to my own comment but i just found this ?

Sinead O'Connor: "I did meet him a couple of times. We didn't get on at all. In fact, we had a punch-up." She continued: "He summoned me to his house after 'Nothing Compares 2 U.' I made it without him. I'd never met him. He summoned me to his house-and it's foolish to do this to an Irish woman-he said he didn't like me saying bad words in interviews. So I told him to fuck off." O'Connor said: "He got quite violent. I had to escape out of his house at five in the morning. He packed a bigger punch than mine.

i have never heard this story wtf

I suppose, though I do feel like the two situations are messy in entirely different ways. Then again, duh, they're two different people. idk

Prince has a live version that was released on his Hits/B-Sides album in 1993. This version is probably the demo he recorded and wasn't ever meant to be public.

oh nvm maybe the family did release it, just not as a single? idk
