they do this periodically... when they want to perform different types of music and don't want to use the Green Day "brand". It might even be contractual sometimes that they have to use a new name for this kind of gig.

the craziest instance was The Network, who they refused to acknowledge was just them in masks pretending to be a eurotrash synth group (it was a year before American Idiot dropped, so no one knew WTF was going on): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV2zXgSFV84

I liked their other side band, The Foxboro Hottubs...like people legit bought their album and it had some radio play.

IMO Green Day's longevity & closeness might best be attributed to them basically being an atypical family band. Mike lived in Billie's garage for part of high school... and they've been making music together since they were 10 (!). I'm not sure that the press figured that out about them when they were first on the scene because they weren't really acting like a "family band"...to say the least. But it goes a long way to explaining why they spend a lot of time together, have houses in the same neighborhood, etc etc.

i liked the foxboro hot tubs too! some of their stuff was really catchy
