Oscars: Best Actor is a Race to Lose to Gary Oldman… Or is It?

December 5, 2017 -- Gary Oldman's still at the top of the race to win Best Actor for "Darkest Hour", though his steam is running low, and Variety's aware of this because...
-- This ties in with Timothee Chalamet gaining speed since winning the earlier critics awards, and 'Call Me by Your Name' getting better reviews/more awards/higher box office/huge buzz overall
-- The usual other names are thrown around as possible nominees, including Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread” (of course), James Franco, “The Disaster Artist” (expected, will probably win the Golden Globe comedy award), and actually Jake Gyllenhaal, “Stronger” over Tom Hanks, “The Post” (who won the NBR's Best Actor)
-- Other potential possible names in the mix (some will at least get a GG nomination next week) include: Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”; Andrew Garfield, “Breathe”; Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”; Kumail Nanjiani, “The Big Sick”; Hugh Jackman, “The Greatest Showman” or “Logan” (will prob get a GG nod for Showman since comedy/musical category this year is empty as fuck outside Franco and Kaluuya); Kumail Nanjiani, “The Big Sick”; and yes... Adam Sandler, “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).”
Golden Globe nominations are this coming Monday; SAG award nominations are next Wednesday; and Oscar nominations are waaaaay down the line, on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.
