YES I know what you mean! I actually used to read fanfics and I was a fanartist for a while before getting into paid art commissions (drawing fanart is what GOT me to into doing paid commissions, lol), so through that I ended up coming across a lot of dark shit in fandom. D: Not to mention there's almost always drama amongst fans over the most mundane shit (I kid you not, people argue over Daria's cup size, for instance, how fucked up is that?). Like some of that just comes across as creepy to me, obsessing over a teen cartoon character's bra size, WTF.
Personally I have such a complicated feeling about fandom, lmao. Like I actually think even fanfics/fanart are fine if it's not creepy shit (like real people fanfic is just too much, imo, among other creepy stuff out there), and I kinda have a ~glory days~ feeling of early Sailor Moon fandom, lol, but nowadays there's just so much on social media where fandom's kind of evolved into much more toxic territory (generally speaking, as I'm sure there are fans who even write fanfic and whatnot who aren't total creeps) that I totally understand people wanting to avoid fandom as a whole. Again it's all about balance, you know?
