she was just staying in her lane, okay!! by not putting poc in her films she's subtextually supporting the idea that more poc filmmakers should exist and be the ones to do so!!!

In that vulture article I read I thiiiink she said that the character is not a good person/"not someone she'd want to depict a black person as"

Oh, yeah, now that I go back that vulture article does only directly quote why she didn't include Matilda/Mattie/Hallie. Wtf. I swear I read an article that said more about Edwina's personality/characterisation.

The op was asking about Kirsten's character tho and Edwina's not enslaved, she's a teacher. (I read she's also a composite of two book characters in the film versions but by keeping the name of the biracial character she should be biracial even if she wasn't in the 1971 version either, right?). I know she didn't want to touch on race at all apparently or maybe she wasn't aware of Edwina's race in the novel but 😬
