yep, i have a lot of experience with them because they're attracted to disability-related fields like special education

i once worked at a deaf school and one teacher once complained to me that she couldn't use a science textbook that basically preached creationism and "god's hand in everything". i was baffled

yep, it's a pretty insidious savior complex

and ultimately what Christianity isn't supposed to be about.

deaf here, didn't go to a deaf school but ur spot on. the deaf community has a HUGE religious presence because they've been preyed on by those groups since childhood, told that they were deformed, and that they need to thank god for their hardships, etc

it's awful

i'm always sus of interpreters who are really religious. inevitably they reveal that they really think we're poor souls who need to be helped and their career is just a way for them to play out their weird savior fantasies

10000000000000% spot on

i've met some really awesome religious interpreters and honestly two of my best hearing friends who sign (one is an interpreter) are pretty devout catholics but 99% of the time your entire comment is why i won't even bother to get to know them. i mean, on top of being gay, i kinda just stay away from that in general lol but i used to feel bad for pre-judging them like that but facebook has immensely helped in weeding them out

i've gotten "bc god told me to" as an answer to "why did you become an interpreter" more than enough times to be skeeved out by it. i'm hoping to become a teacher soon so not looking forward to meeting those type of interpreters/deaf people tbh

This. I've never met a scientologist irl but I'm positive it'd be a trip. I do try and be fair and put crazy Christians in the same category as scientologists.

scientology is a cult though.

i get the 'all religious stories are crazy!' thing but comparing it to christianity dismisses the seriousness of what scientology really is
