Yay, a book post!

I've been off reading but in these dark times I'm turning to books, my ultimate comfort, again.

Currently reading Swing Time, Zadie Smith's new book. It is... not that great so far. Of course Zadie being Zadie there are still lots of great quotes already and the writing itself is stellar. I'm just not sure choosing a nameless super passive narrator was the right choice. Also one of the characters is this Madonna-esque popstar... I'm not sure fictionalized popstars ever work.

I'm about 1/4 of the way through so hopefully it gets better.

Disapointed to hear that, but I’m still going to give it a chance.

I know some people were disappointed by On Beauty but it was such a fantastic read to me, so who knows…

Have you read the rest of her bibliography? If yes which book would you recommend (besides White Teeth)?

I've read all her books!

I also really loved The Autograph Man and enjoyed NW.

I did not like On Beauty but a lot of people seem to love it and consider it her second best after White Teeth so you might want to give it a shot.

I'm one of those people who loved On Beauty but yeah, White Teeth is truly in its own class. Sometimes I still randomly think of the 'loving a man as if he were an island' speech' one of the twin gives to Irie at the end of the book. Zadie just has this gift of turning sentences that just stick in your brain.

I'll follow your recommendation and read The Autograph Man. Thank you very much for answering.

I want to read Swing Time, but I haven't enjoyed a Zadie Smith book since The Autograph Man. I tried reading On Beauty, but the way she wrote Kiki, was annoying.

OMG another person who like The Autograph Man! I feel like everyone hates it and loves On Beauty but I feel the opposite.

I've never read Zadie before but On Beauty is waiting, collecting metaphorical dust on my Kindle.

I just got a copy of Swing Time this weekend but I'm not gonna start that 'til I finish some books and read her older stuff first. I'm in the middle of White Teeth rn.
