My brother dealt with this in his (lame, short-lived) modeling career. These labels/agencies will keep you signed just to keep you away from the competition, but also because if you're going to produce anything of value, it's gonna be for the company that already has you. It costs the label nothing to keep Brandy contracted, Why would they let her go make music for someone else? If she had anything good up her sleeve, she's stuck releasing it for the people who already signed her, which is something she should have considered before signing the contract and spending her advance. The label isn't doing anything wrong here. Brandy signed a contract.
Where does it say anywhere that she spent her advance? If she's not selling well with her current label and they're not putting money into marketing, then why would they be threatened by another label? If they want to make money off her, it's their responsibility that she has the proper access to advertise her work.
Well she's not making them money or producing hits for them, as an artist it is her job creatively to produce hits and sales for the label...and they're probably not letting her go because from a business standpoint shes still a name with some traction
MTE, I thought that was their job description. I'm indifferent to Rita Ora, but they really just signed her to be a full time model and socialite. Then we have my girl Tinashe in the other corner who has to finance her own goddamn videos. In the last decade record labels have been just recycling the same artists for them to put out albums every year to keep people interested. I see far few less new artists these days and when we do, they have one single that does moderately well and they disappear.
