Even if he was working there for the money... so what? I'm supposed to mock someone because they work as a cook in a chain restaurant? That is so condescending, rude, and shitty. I hate it when people mock other people because they perceive their jobs as "low" or "trashy." That shit is ugly and classist.
Same with my bro, but substitute grocery store for target. He still doesn't make huge money, but he can pay his bills and travel (and doesn't have student loans). I make more now, but he definitely had insurance and benefits before I did and I'm 8 yrs older.
My cousin worked for McDonalds for 25 years, started as a cashier in her teens and ended up taking over the very store she worked at about 6 years ago after the GM retired. Head Office said told her they had several people recommend her for the job from store level to corporate.
And its become a family thing now too. Two of her three sons work for the company. One wants to go into Corporate and the other wants to own his own store.
My aunt works at a McDonals. When she started like 15 years ago they paid for her to go to school to get a management degree. Now she's a manager, makes way more than both her sisters make at "high class" jobs, has amazing perks, and is super happy there.
Yup. My mom always said to treat people with respect and tip them well, especially if they're doing something that you can't do. People always give me weird looks when I say that I admire people who work in the service industry, but I know I can't do that job. I'd have been fired or the focus of a lawsuit in less than a week. I hate that people undervalue soft skills.
After being out of the industry for years I know I could never go back. Hell, even dealing with vendors annoys me and that's a very professional relationship, so if I had to deal with customers being rude I'd be a huge cunt. I already was in that situation and I didn't have the perspective i have now.
When I was 18 and worked at a froyo place a little kid mentioned to me how they wanted to work there when they got older, and their jerk of a mom replied back with a "ew no you do not!!! you will not be working a job like this..." She said it right in front of my face I was like lmao mmmmk
People are just straight up fucking asshole snobs. Also one time a guy tipped me a penny and smugly said "for your college fund." To which I said " no I'm good but thank you" and gave it back to him.
It's really a dumbass mentality since many are open 24/7 so you always get hours. Plus McDonald's managers make a solid $35-40k and supervisors are up there in the $50-55k range. They make more than most of my friends with degrees and student loans on top of it.
I used to work at Starbucks. I once had a customer come in with her teenage son. When they got to the register, she was really condescending to me & after she ordered, she said "See, this is why you go to college. So you can get a REAL job, unlike this girl." I have a Master's degree. Even if I didn't go to college, it was still a real job.
That sucks. When I was a nanny people would give me the most patronizing comments, as if it wasn't a "real" job. My friends who are servers have to deal with jerks, too.
Wow, fuck those people. I've never been a nanny, but I'm sure being one is very demanding and takes up a lot of your time, and you're dealing with children, which isn't exactly easy, especially if the child themselves are difficult and require being handled/catered to a certain way
