Ugh, fuckin' Harvey. I saw an early screening of this way back in November and I liked it; it has a weird, broad sense of humor, but once you get into it it's fun. ( Read more... )

Harvey hasn't had a hit in like a decade, and he keeps doing shady shit like this. Why are people still venerating him?

IKR?? Remember when he tried to make Burnt happen last year?? And later this year he apparently has HHhH (I saw him at the screening and just went >___________________<)...except Anthropoid with Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan is about the exact same story and that's coming out first, soooo...??? Get it together, man.

I...didn't love it, honestly, and I adore both Jacks. The structure is interesting -- it's kind of 1/3 with the Nazi dude and 1/3 with the rebel guys and then 1/3 aftermath/both of them, but...I don't know, the pacing was just kind of sluggish and it bordered on torture/misery porn at times. But it may go through edits between now & then, idk. Anthropoid does look better to me, tho.

oh shit, really? i had enough of torture porn with the revenant. how are mia and rosamund in their roles? sorry to spam you with questions, i'm definitely a bit disappointed, but not surprised. it was always going to be hard to adapt.

Oh, I forgot that was TWC. Probably cuz I adored it and Harvey is the worst and I don't want him connected with things I love.

He hasn't? Wasn't Jennifer Lawrence giving him credit for her Oscar win?

He's gotten weirdly defeatist over the past couple of years: Between pushing The Immigrant & Snowpiercer to commercial obscurity out of spite to having The Hateful Eight & Carol essentially drop out of the awards cycle, it feels like he's either given up or lost his touch. He also spent millions and strong-armed half of Broadway to try and will Finding Neverland into a hit and it's still closing after about 18 months at a big loss. I have a feeling unless The Weinstein Company really turns it around, they may shut in the next 5 years or so, and Megan Ellison can reign supreme.

The fact that Megan Ellison is bank rolling David O'Russell's mediocre career makes me dislike her on principle, but he's one of the smartest financial decisions she's ever made. However, she's really going to have to reign in how many risky projects she takes in order to really succeed. Annapurna is still dealing the financial effects of The Master.

The DOR stuff still pisses me off, even though I understand it from a purely business point of view.

Regarding The Master, there was a PTA interview around the time Inherent Vice came out with quotes from two studio execs grumbling over why they had to fund an inevitably unprofitable film, and the response was "because it's your turn". I'm all for PTA getting all the money in the world to do whatever he wants though. I wonder if we'll see Weinstein and Ellison working together again, given how much they clashed over The Master.

RE: Weinstein and Ellison, I could see them working together if DOR or Jennifer Lawrence is attached. Because although Weinstein has made it very clear he dislikes Ellison (I don't know what her thoughts are on him, probably because she's smart enough not to say anything, but that's another topic.) he's willing to do a lot for financial success.

Financial success he seems to desperately need right now. He has been pushing Sing Street a lot lately but not sure if it's paying off, and his potential awards slate for 2016 is dry. He's got Lion, which could be baity, but it says a lot that Michael Keaton's McDonalds biopic was bumped to August, and there's at least 3 reasonably big or at least bait-potential films languishing without a release date.
