is the book good? I just read the summary on wikipedia, it sounds interesting and potentially disappointing.

I have an unpopular opinion but I found it to be an absolute mess. Almost no cohesion, very blurry lines between literal and figurative (like, what is exactly HAPPENING in some of these scenes?? couldn't pay me). It wandered and almost totally lost any sense of concrete aim, who wants what, etc etc. I just, was done way, way before the book was.

Between this book as a source and the final season of Hannibal as imagined almost purely via dream logic by Bryan Fuller, I'm cynical as hell about this show. But I like Ricky and love Ian McShane so whatever, I'll be there. lol

I bought the book because I've heard so many good things about it and was excited about the show because of Ricky. I started it a few weeks ago and just barely made it through the first chapter. I just found it so boring. I set it down and haven't picked it up since, though I may try again.

I feel like saying this is not going to go over well, but I just do not get the hype around Neil Gaiman. This is the second book of his that I've tried because I heard amazing things about it and could not even get halfway through. I'm not a fan.

What was the first?

I loved Strange Omens (he wrote that with Terry tho) and Neverwhere is my fave.

D: the first was Neverwhere. I've tried it twice and never finished, though I got further the second time. I've heard so many good things about it but I find his writing quite boring :\

same here tbh, I didn't hate it but it certainly came across as sloppy. I thought that was deliberate and that I was the one who was thick for not getting it, my friend circle was packed with Gaiman fans.

(I don't hate him/his writing, but idt this specimen is great)

to balance it out lol, it's one of my favourite books. it has amazing world building and it's so imaginative and fun to read. one of those books i couldn't put down and still regularly reread scenes from.

i should add that i do like neil gaiman's writing a lot in general. if he's not your taste this book will probably be a chore

It's one of my favorite books too. That one chapter almost made me stop reading, but I'm glad I did, because I love the world building and the mythos that seeps into the book and I kinda love how the book keeps switching genres, like the random investigation in the small town.

How could you not put it down, it's so fucking long and nothing happens, lol.

(not being snarky, it's just honestly the complete opposite of how i felt, different strokes)

I enjoyed it while reading it (I think I was in high school? Maybe college?) but don't remember much about it. So I guess it's not that memorable? I remember a spider God? Good Omens >>>>>>>>

Very good world building but I found the end product a bit disappointing. I think the adaptation will be a lot more successful though. Tbh I find this book a bit divisive, I would give it a shot bc I know so many people who love a lot.
