I hate to be that person but I want ontd's opinion on this show. Is it really good? Reddit seems to think it's underrated and amazing but...it's reddit. They find rape amazing too, so I'm skeptical.
I worry about the show being sexist, not having good female characters and such. What I've read about the kind of comedy does seem like the kind I'd like but I watch too many shows and cannot waste my time with another show that has no women. So I guess my question is, how's the show treatment of women?
I was skeptical going in but Josh is always the one that's shown as being a dumbass and the women he dates are actually...well people? normal? human? (strangely enough using people and normal and human does not accurately describe most of the who Josh dates lol)
and his sister is fantastic and always calls him out on his shit.
mte I think he is routinely shown to be the jerk/insecure one/stupid one/wrong one in the situation. even though it's like a revolving door of girlfriend characters, they all seem "real."
and we had a whole episode from the sister's perspective last season!
Yeah, good point. They're rarely ever shown as haha women, amirite? and more just to point out how the ones Josh ends up with aren't right for him (and vice versa).
His sister is fantastic. I remember they treated hitting on a hot girl like a crime scene and he had to go in and hit on her. His sister was like WAIT. WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO BE HIT ON? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
Well, it is written from a guy's perspective. Not that there aren't things that are mutually relatable to both sides about life in your late 20's, but the story does revolve around a young man in his search for love.
Personally, I don't have much of a problem with how ladies are presented in it because the whole show is so cartoonish. But I don't speak for everyone. So far there have been two episodes (tonight included) that focus solely on Jay's sister where he didn't even appear at all.
I can understand how you feel, especially since this show is about a mediocre white dude who is sad he's single. I think the show has an awareness to the women in it and the role women play (they actually have a few episodes dedicated in his sister's POV and her dating life and I actually think she has some brilliant moments.) Unlike a lot of rom coms, you're not rooting for the dude to get the girl (his ex.) It's all about learning from your experience when it comes to dating and love and the show is appropriate to call out the dudes when they're in the wrong (often in a comedic way.) I do feel like all his girlfriends/dates are very humanized regardless if someone is in the wrong or not. Plus the have a couple women on the writing staff this season (Sofia Alvarez and Marika Sawyer.)
It's a very very strange show. It's funny (it's not funny like Always Sunny for example tho) it won't make you laugh out loud but it's definitely a great show. I recommend it to everyone!
I watched it out of curiosity last week and enjoyed it. It's all dependent on where your interests lie, I think. Like others have said, it's all very surreal.
