And Fate Takes Its Toll

Massu nodded and continued up the stairs. Yamapi stared at his retreating back until he disappeared, waited a few seconds, and walked down to join Yuya.

Yuya, not waiting for him, turned and collapsed on the sofa, burying his face in his hands and directing it toward the ground. Yamapi's weight dropped next to him as Yuya groaned.

"It's the same Massu, right? I can tell from the way you reacted.  I’m sorry, I seriously thought. . . .”

"Yes, that's Massu. Don’t worry ‘bout it, it’s not your fault you have the hots for a boyfriend-stealing cheat."

"From the way you went on about him, I thought he'd be better-looking." Yamapi said, choosing to ignore Yuya’s remark about Shige.

Yuya started, turned, and gazed at Yamapi, eyes wide. "He's a drop-dead gorgeous hunk. Are you blind?"

"Pfft, you make him sound unearthly. Looks to me he's pretty normal. . . average."

"Oh, what do you know? Sure you’d say that he’s just average, you like Shige after all. But you may as well give up. He's the same guy that has destroyed my life. I doubt he's going to give up on Massu any time soon." Yuya snorted.

“Oh please. Massu may be obsessed with Shige, but Shige was eyeing me all year. Sure he may have said a few things about his best friend but I never saw him mooning over the man. Not to mention that he was still going crazy over me while we were upstairs just now.” Yamapi said, smirking in.

“Oooh, confident much?” Yuya retorted, cocking an eyebrow.

Yamapi just shrugged him off and continued. “Hey, you know what? Maybe you'll get lucky and when Shige realizes I am the center of his sexual universe, Massu will come crawling back to you."   Yamapi said, lips twitching in amusement.

"Yeah, that's just what I want, Shige's leftovers. You always know how to cheer me up, Pi. . . You really do."

"Get a grip on yourself, Yuya. Remember, in front of those two, you only have eyes for me. And mark my words, by the end of their trip, we're going to have that ex-boyfriend of yours realizing how much he loves you, calling himself an idiotic fool, wishing he never gave you up, and cursing all guys named Yamapi as boyfriend-stealers, you hear me? We are going to make him hate me. . . . More than hate. . . . Loathe. He's going to loathe my very existence."

"If he loathes you, it's only going to be because you stole Shige." Yuya groaned.

"No, that comes later. After he realizes that he's madly in love with you and I've taken the opportunity to get together with you from him. I mean it, Yuya. Then, when I catch Shige's eye, he's going to hate me even more because now I'm taking Shige-the next best thing to you, at least in Massu’s eyes."  Yamapi said in assurance.

"I wish I could agree with you on this, but it's pretty hopeless."  Yuya said dejectedly.

"Hopeless? Yuya, look at me. I am drool worthy." Yamapi said, thumping his chest.

"You’re so full of yourself, aren’t you? Okay, let’s say I agree on your drool-worthiness, that doesn't mean Shige's going to fall in love with you, not if he's in love with Massu. And, I'm not in love with you either. It appears that like me, Massu’s the best thing in his eyes as well, and you just come as a close second."

"That may be so at the moment, but can you deny my raw sexual attraction?"

Choosing to ignore his friend’s remark, Yuya asked instead, "So, what’s the plan? How are we going to make Massu hate you?"

"First off, no moping. We’re going to show them that you're so over Massu. He doesn't even exist to you anymore. Got it?" Yamapi replied.

Yuya hung his head and nodded.

"Then, I need you to remember that we have the advantage. This is our hometown. We know the people, we know the hotspots, and we know how to work it around here. I am Yamashita Tomohisa-dead sexy, untouchable, and one of the most eligible bachelors around. You are Tegoshi Yuya- gorgeous, hot, model student, great athlete, and . . ."

"Moody as all fuck?" Yuya interjected.

"Look, you have to give this self-pity a break or you're never going to convince Massu. Shove it okay? We've just got to play our cards right. We're going to go for lunch first. Show them around town. We'll also go clubbing tonight, and you and I are going to be so sweet to each other that they’ll think we’re positively revolting. We're going to dance. We're going to grind our hips together. We are going to make out on the dance floor, damn it, and you're going to be so hot for me you won't even remember Massu's name." Yamapi said, and to emphasize his point, he leaned forward. He gripped Yuya's shoulders, shoved him back against the armrest and stretched his body across Yuya's. His head dipped, and he nipped the flesh on Yuya's neck gently between his teeth. Yuya's breath hitched as Yamapi worked his hand up the expanse of skin toward his ear. Lips and tongue flicked in the hollow behind his ear and around the shell. Yamapi's breath was hot as it skirted over his moistened skin. Yuya squirmed.

"Do you accept the challenge?" said Yamapi.

"Oh, yeah," Yuya said, squirming.

"Yeah? Then knock it off, okay?" Yamapi's voice was low, husky, and Yuya squirmed all the more. "I know you're in love with this kid, but we can work this. . . . You and me, got it??!!!"

Yuya's head rolled back and his breath became laboured as his eyelids closed.  "Okay."

"We'll meet up with Kei and Ryo tomorrow. Maybe Kris, too.  I'll let them know what's going on first so they can prepare for their roles."

"Ryo’s a great actor."

Yamapi nodded. He rolled his hips against Yuya's.  "You're so fucking hot, Yuya. You don't have to stress out over this. Massu already knows how desirable you are. You just have to remind him."

Yuya nodded. He moved his body with Yamapi's, hips arching to connect with heat. Their slow rhythm began to quicken, and Yamapi smirked at the low timbre humming from Yuya's throat. The shots of pleasure coursing through his veins started to crescendo.

"Holy shit, Pi . . ."

"You can pretend to be hot for me, can't you?" Yamapi smirked.

Yuya nodded again.

"Well, I may want Shige all to myself, but you ought to know that I’ll never let you down, I’m not your best bud for nothing after all. So, get this into your head, Yuya. By the end of it all, it will be back to you and Massu, which would, of course, leave Shige open."

Yamapi buried his face in the crook of Yuya's neck and moaned as their hips met, rolling faster with every thrust. Yuya slid one hand down Yamapi's body, clutching the curve of his ass. The other hand tangled in Yamapi's hair. Yamapi gripped the armrest beside Yuya's head, bracing his body, as the other gripped Yuya's shoulder, pressing it harder into the sofa cushions.

A soft gasp broke the moment. Yamapi and Yuya glanced up.

"I'm sorry," said Shige. "I didn't . . . I mean . . . We can come back later. Oh God!"

Shige's face was flaming red. Beside him, Massu appeared drained of all color. Yamapi smirked, pulling himself away from Yuya, and as he retracted, he made sure to drag his palms along the length of Yuya's body. He shrugged as Yuya scrambled into a seating position.

"Sorry about that, we got bored waiting," said Yamapi. "I'm just going to stop in the bathroom before we get going."

Massu gaped at Yamapi as he disappeared. He glanced to Yuya, who refused to meet his eyes. His attention turned to Shige. "Is he always so . . . uh . . . open?" he asked Shige.

Shige, face contorted and still crimson, nodded. "He's very . . ."

Yuya made a little cough and said, "Liberated?"

Shige nodded. "uhm, yeah, I guess."

"I'm really sorry about that, especially considering we've just met. . . not the best first impression, huh?" Yuya said.

Shige chewed on his lower lip and shrugged. "Hey, you know . . . well, it's not the first time I've seen Yamapi like that. Just . . ."

"He's kind of difficult to deny," said Yuya.

"I imagine." Massu snorted.

Yamapi returned to the living room, leaned against the door frame, and crossed his arms over his chest.

"So? Who's up for lunch?"

Massu was repulsed, annoyed, and devoid of hope. They were just supposed to meet Yuya and Yamapi in the living room before going to lunch, but they walked in on a scene more explicit than he'd ever want to witness. Yuya beneath another man-another man who was more attractive than Massu could ever wish to be. To make matters worse, this other man had known Yuya since forever. They had the kind of friendship he had with Shige, but while his relationship felt weak and flat, Yuya and Yamapi seemed to have no problems making the transition between friends and lovers. Not if that display in the living room was any indication.

Massu growled. What kind of people behaved in public like that? Sure, it was in the privacy of their host’s own living room, but it may as well have been in public when they knew Massu and Shige wouldn't be long before returning downstairs. And how could Yuya act like that when they'd just broken up a before summer started? Hadn't he spent the last nine or so months of the schoolyear with Massu? Hadn’t he told Massu a thousand times over that he loved him?

He was so stupid. Massu actually believed Shige when he said there was no way Yuya could be over him already. It made so much sense, but it seemed Yuya didn't mean all those things he said. He hadn't meant it when he called it love-hadn't felt the way he said when they made love or Yuya held him close. It really was over, gone. Yuya already found a replacement. A replacement that came with an amazing friendship, and just looking at Yamapi . . . Massu knew he didn't stand a chance.

It didn't end there. What could have been a nice, fulfilling lunch instead prompted more thoughts of self-inflicted wounds. Massu stared across the table and watched the interaction between Yuya and Yamapi. There was a comfortable ease between them as they bantered and bickered. Casual touches passed between them. They angled toward each other in the booth and sat closer than 'just friends' might. They were the only indications that anything more went on between them; there were no pet names involved. It was enough, though, to drive Massu crazy.

Shige-keen on Massu's emotions as ever-tried to compensate. Massu was proud of him for the efforts. Just as Shige was keen on his feelings, Massu knew the interaction bugged Shige, but he only spared glances in their direction when speaking to them. Most of the time he kept his face turned to Massu. His sweet, adoring smile neither looked nor felt as forced as Massu knew it must be. He laughed at the appropriate moments, took the initiative to brush his hand against Massu's, and even placed a kiss on his cheek when he retreated to the bathroom.

Left alone at the table with the “couple”, Massu stared down. Yamapi broke the silence. Massu wanted to slit his throat with the butter knife.

"I've never seen Shige look so happy," said Yamapi. "Things must be really working out for you."

Massu shrugged. "Well, you know, it's been a long time coming. I'm sure you understand."

He glanced up to meet Yamapi's eyes. From his peripheral vision, he saw Yuya regarding his expression. He tried not to meet his gaze, but being under Yuya's scrutiny like this was unbearable. Their eyes met for half a second before Massu looked away again. Yuya frowned.

"Yeah, well," said Yuya. "I'm glad you got what you were looking for."

Massu nodded. "Yeah. You, too."

That was the extent of the conversation. Massu's heart fell more. They had nothing to say to each other anymore. It was only a few months ago that their conversations could go on for hours about nothing. Yuya teased him the way he teased Yamapi now. Massu found himself envious of the attention Yuya bestowed upon this man, and he didn't care how long they had been friends. He didn't care if he was the one that dumped Yuya, or if they thought he was in bliss with Shige. Yamapi knew about his history with Yuya. He'd have to be blind and oblivious not to notice how very interested Shige was. They had no right to be flaunting like this.

When lunch ended, Yuya and Yamapi took Shige and Massu on a tour throughout the town. He got to see a lot of the places Yuya talked about while they were rooming together at school. At a small café where they stopped for coffee, Shige hid under the booth while Massu met the infamous Nishikido Ryo, Shige’s roommate at the dorms. A few minutes of random talk, the siblings Kei and Kris came bouncing in. Kei almost immediately commented that it was good Massu and Shige came to visit. It was, apparently, impossible to get Yuya or Yamapi out of the house since their return from school.

"We've been busy," said Yamapi.

"Indoors?" said Ryo. "What's there to do that's so fascinating in your house, Pi? Then again . . . . ."

"Yeah, I bet you were busy” Kei said

Kris raised her eyebrows and looked between all four boys, then finally commented, "I don't even want to know."

Neither did Massu.
