Girl groups galore (alliteration WIN XD)
if anyone remembers, I wrote a massive girl group post in January...since then, we've gotten a glimpse of 2NE1, Rainbow became fact over rumor, the supposed JYP and SM groups haven't been mentioned again, and a few other groups have debuted/are debuting
Let's take a look at the 2009 contenders....

DSP (FinKL, SS, A'St1, Kara) ~ Rainbow
Premise: A seven-member group (each member corresonding to a color :P lol) 3 years in the making, going for sexy rather than cute....besides that, we've gotten no new info since January
when I wrote my first post, so it may be outdated
Debut: June or September (to avoid conflict with Kara/SS activities)
Preliminary Verdict: we'll see...cute is kinda overdone lately, so sexy might just work

Star Empire (Jewelry, VOS) ~ Nine Muses
Premise: nine members who are known for their singing, dancing, acting, MCing, and modeling
WAIT...THAT SOUNDS FAMILIAR.....!!!!!
Debut: July/August
Preliminary verdict: hell to the no. PASS.

Cube (JYP's sister; AJ) ~ "Hyunah group"
Premise: none yet except that ex-WG Hyunah will be in it :P dance-focused
Debut: ha. originally Feb 2009, who knows....
Preliminary verdict: I loved Hyunah when she was in WG, and I like the idea of a girl dance group (a la 2PM?) >> definitely keeping an eye on this one!

YG ~ 2NE1
Premise: well, I think we all know who they are by now. female BB. lol. they're trying to be "different," and I think Lollipop showed they thus far defy categorization - cute? sexy? dancy? idk. as long as they stop doing horrific things to Minji's face, we're gold
Debut: May 6th with "Fire" ~ here's a preview, YG will release a few more seconds a day lol. CL is FIERCE yooo
Preliminary Verdict: if Lollipop is any indication (and since GD is helping them out, I think it's a very accurate indication), these girls should have no problem becoming an instant sensation [check out that rhyming!]

MNET (Seeya, DaVichi) ~ T-Ara
this is gonna be a long one, since they just debuted!
Premise: new five-member "bright, dance group"
They definitely went for the fresh, clean, cute image. Alas, it reeks ridiculously of SNSD minus 4. Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite kind of image - cute clothes, minimal makeup....but it just looks ridiculously unoriginal. And personally I think they are VERY pretty - something else that reminds me of SNSD

Jiyeon: Kim Taehee lookalike, in a project group with Davichi and Seeya, supposedly Nam Gyuri's Seeya replacement. someone explain to me how she will be in 2 groups simultaneously?? lol
reasons to be jealous of this girl: modeled with shinee, took pics with lots of idols, and is so damn tall + pretty. gosh

hyomin: I think she looks a lot like Jessica (SNSD)
ji-ae: I may be alone on this but she reminds me a lot of Kim SoEun esp. when she smiles (more in the group pics than the individual ones here)
jiwon ~ she reminds me of someone too, but I can't put a finger on it...I'm pretty sure it's the eyes/eyebrows. Yuri? nah. idk
I think the girls are REALLY cute, see a lot more pics of them here and here (also many pics of Jiyeon w/ Seeya/Davichi here ~ she looks really pretty)
and check out their MV for their debut song, where not only are they totally borrowing SNSD's image, it's also very remniscent of CSJH's "My Everything." the girls have strong vocals, but a ballad debut is not the best idea imo...they should have picked something poppy and catchy, hopefully they have one of those coming out soon after
Preliminary verdict: I'm rooting like crazy for these girls, but methinks they may just get lost in their lack of originality....

And who can forget SNSD? Rumor has it their comeback will be September 9 (SM said later half of the year, and 9/09/09 seems like the perfect day for our fave 9-member girl group...?)
These girl groups better get cracking before the Gee girls storm back onto the scene. Plus, no idea if/when WG are ever coming back to Korea. Very soon, methinks, following their imminent US flop
Oh and apparently Park Hanbyul has a girl group...pics here. whatever.
