BOF v. EOE
Anyone else following East of Eden? *crickets chirp* No, just me? Ah. Well, anyway.
I just finished Ep.10 of BOF and I gotta say, despite the extreme plot differences, I am seeing a lot of parallels between these two dramas b/c of the strong themes of family, love, and most of all poor v. rich.
*EDIT*: yes, I am well aware it is not just these two dramas but, like, 80% of them. But since I'm watching these back-to-back, and I very rarely watch Kdramas TBH, I thought it was worth commenting on :(
Brief background if you haven't watched East of Eden:
There are three main families in this story ~ Lee, Shin, Gook.
- The Lee's are a very poor, average family. Sons Dongchul (Sexyhon) and Dongwook.
- Pres. Gook is a huge mogul, kind of similar to Shinhwa Group. Daughter Youngran (Lee Yeon Hee)
- The Shin patriarch is a ruthless mogul wannabe. Son Myunghun
Other characters to note:
- Jihyun (Han Ji Hye) ~ also poor; childhood sweetheart of Dongwook
- Hyerin (Lee Da Hae) ~ daughter of rich newspaper publisher; terrible family life
Rich-poor couplings:
- Dongchul (poor) + Youngran
- Dongwook (poor) + Hyerin
- Myunghun + Jihyun (poor)
And just a few strong similarities I found:
1. the concept of family for rich v. poor people
Just like Junpyo loved being with Jandi's family, all the rich children in EOE were jealous of the Lee's, but the strongest parallel would definitely be Youngran-Dongchul. Youngran absolutely loved the Lee family and staying with them, like Junpyo.
2. rich boy falls for average girl
Myunghun was madly in love with Jihyun, showered her with gifts, and strong-armed her into a relationship. Ok, similarities kind of end there...b/c although Junpyo was aggressive, he was also much sweeter and more romantic. Oh yeah, and Junpyo ummm didn't rape Jandi, get her pregnant, and thus marry her.
3. mother picks pride over money
Despite badly needing it, the Lee matriarch burned Shin's money when he tred to buy her off, earning the ire of someone very, very, very bad to earn the ire of. lol. Similarly, Jandi's mom turned down the money Junpyo's mom brought and poured salt on her. Again, earning the ire of someone you do not want to earn the ire of. haha
