Summary:Ohno didn't mean to laugh at the dorky kid. He blames himself for making his life miserable.
Fanfic Masterpost 1-100 Masterpost ++++++++++
Ohno Satoshi laughed when he saw a dorky student spill grape juice all over his front trousers. He didn’t mean to, but he couldn’t help it since it was funny. However, he felt guilty right away. As soon as the other kids around him heard he was laughing, they looked at the dorky student and began to laughing as well. That day, Ohno wanted to apologize. But he couldn’t, the dorky kid asked to be sent home for the rest of the day.
The following day in preschool, Ohno wondered where the dorky student was. When he finds him, he hopes to apologize for yesterday, and that it was his fault that every called him ‘Pee-pee Sho.’ He did see him once, during snack time, but he shied away asking to be left alone. Ohno felt ten times the amount of guilt when he saw the hurt look in his face. “I’m sorry,” was what he wanted to say, but the words were just stuck in his throat.
It was during nap time when Ohno took his chance. The dorky student was all by himself by the window, covering his ears when he heard someone call him by his undesirable nickname. Ohno wanted to hush them, to sock them in the face and tell them to shut up or else -- especially that kid with a pointy chin and a mole resting on it. What was his name again? Nino-something? Ignoring that kid, he walked to the dorky kid who didn’t seem to notice his presence. As soon as Ohno laid besides him with his self-made bed, he poked the dorky kid.
“Leave me alone,” The kid almost cried.
“But I’m sorry,” Ohno apologizes, trying to get him to unblock his ears. “I’m sorry about yesterday, I didn’t mean it.”
“Leave me alone,” The kid repeats, his hands still blocking his ears. “Please...”
And so Ohno did, for 12 years.
He was a high schooler already, yet he still hadn’t made enough friends. That kid, back in preschool who had a mole on his chin, at least he became friends with him. Though in the past, they had trouble getting along with each other. Puberty and all, getting mad at each other for no reasons. But there was this one day when the fighting settled down and Nino (that’s how Ohno likes to call him) leaned on his shoulder and sighed as he asked him how his day was. Miserable, was what Ohno wanted to say because as soon as this event happened, he sees the dorky kid -- now a high schooler like him as well -- walk through the halls, having a frightful look on his face as their past classmates pushed him around... Ohno never got to apologize, and he hated himself for it.
It was Nino’s 17th birthday so he threw a party inviting almost everyone (ideally, half of the school) to his party (Ohno kept forgetting his friend was rich). He stuck to Nino all day, glad that his friend didn’t mind at all. When the music became louder and louder, Ohno lost Nino halfway and he felt -- became-- lost. He wandered around for almost half an hour around Nino’s mansion (he wasn’t used to the place yet), and almost wept when he kept ending up in front of a dead-end. However, something took his interest. Near the end of one of the hallways, he heard someone crying. So Ohno went and checked it out.
“Are you ok?” Ohno asks as soon as he found the room where the crying came from. “Is-- Oh.” It was that dorky kid... He rarely saw him in Nino’s parties.
“Are you ok?” He asks again as he dared to approach the student. “Did you get hurt?”
The student turned around to face him, looking angered and distraught. “Are you here to play with me too?! You asshole. You’re Ninomiya’s friend, aren’t you?! Tell him thanks for inviting me.”
Ohno was taken back. Yeah, he did something awful to him in preschool, but he hadn’t done anything to him now. Or did he? Ah, he couldn’t remember. His memories were a blur sometimes. “Wha-- Nino? What did he do?”
“This!” The student yelled, showing him a tattered item in his hands. It sparkled in red, but it looked more of like blood since the thing was broken. “They broke it! They-- They broke everything that was precious to me! I just wish I wasn’t alive...”
Ohno frowned. “Don’t say that.”
“Oh yeah? What are you going to do about it?”
“Apologize.”
“For that Ninomiya kid? What’s the use,” he scoffed. “You’re just like one of them.”
“I’m not... And Nino had nothing to do with it.”
“Then explain why he invited me here and ruined everything. For once in my life I thought that someone was finally going to treat me right... You what, I’m outta here.”
Before Ohno could apologize, however, the student already left. He’s going to have to talk with Nino later when the party is over.
“Me? Invite that Sho kid?” Nino laughed. “I would never. What makes you think I would invited someone like him? He’s going to ruin our reputation.”
Ohno glared at him. “Don’t you mean yours Nino? I don’t give a crap about mines. Now tell me if you really invited Sho or not?”
“I didn’t ok,” Nino finally answered seriously. “It’s must be one of the guys. I don’t know. If I invited him, I would have told you.” True, he would have.
Ohno sighed. “Fine. Just give me a moment here.”
He didn’t explain to his friend why he needed a moment. It was for sure not Nino, so it must be one of his fanboys, or whatever they are since they always follow him around. After Nino gave him a quizzical look, Ohno stormed out of the mansion...
The next day, he was suspended for beating up Nino’s friends.
Ohno was finally allowed back to school and right before they field trip to the onsen, too. Nino eventually forgave him for being an ass making him lose his friends and a bit of his reputation because he needed someone to cling on to during their field trip -- “Being lonely sucks,” he says. On that very same day they departed, Ohno was surprised. He thought that the student wouldn’t come to the trip, but turns out, he was his seating partner (Nino was forced to sit with this fat girl he dislikes). As soon as Ohno took a seat, the student scooted closer to the window. He didn’t even acknowledge him back when Ohno whispered a small “hello.”
“No fair!” Nino pouted, grabbing Ohno’s arm as he tried to drag him away. “I want to sleep with Satoshi!”
“You can’t,” their senpai, Hiroshi-san, snapped. “Rules are rules, Ninomiya. Go to where you’re assigned or we’ll drag you whiny ass back home.”
“Fine,” Nino finally gave in. “I’ll get you back Hiroshi. Watch me.”
“As if,” their senpai whispered before going somewhere else. Nino’s threats and his lack of respect towards his elders were a normal thing for everyone, so Hiroshi-san didn’t seem to be affected by it at all.
As much as Ohno hated being separated from his only friend, he has no choice but to get used to it. He disliked the fact that the school trip was a bonding trip as well since the teachers and the school board highly encouraged it. Great, who’s his sleeping partner gonna be?... As if the bus was a coincidence, so was his sleeping partner. Turns out, Sho was his sleeping partner for the rest of the field trip --Oh, and also his touring partner. Ohno couldn’t be more delighted.
“Stop sticking to me,” Sho would say the following morning. “Go back to that Ninomiya kid.”
“But we’re partners,” Ohno informed. “We’re supposed to get to know each other.”
“Well I don’t need to. I’m already satisfied having no one in my life.”
“Isn’t that kind of sad?” Ohno questions. “Don’t you at least have someone in your life? Family, maybe?”
“Screw family. A bunch of useless pricks...”
“Not even your mom?”
“Never had one.”
“Oh...” Ohno fell back a little, feeling worse for being so nosy. It’s not that he didn’t mean to make Sho say that, but he wanted to know more about him. To try and learn something about his partner, at least. “I’m sorry... I...”
Sho was already gone by the time he looked up.
Ohno stayed up while everyone else was sleeping, or probably doing something inappropriate somewhere in this facility. As he turned to face his left, the side Sho sleeps, he scrunched his face in confusion. The bed was empty and neatly folded as if Sho never came back from wherever he disappeared from. Ohno began to worry. Without trying to wake anyone up, he grabbed a couple of his things (so he could use it as an excuse to head to the hot springs) and walked out of the room. As soon as he stepped out, he began searching for his partner. Where could he be?
He almost wanted to give up searching since it could probably take all night to look for his partner. He retreated back to the rooms when something stopped him. Of course, he hadn’t even checked the hot springs yet! Why didn’t he that earlier. Geez.
It was obvious Sho wasn’t in the womens bath -- unless he was in the mixed, then he might be there. However, Ohno checked the mens anyways. As soon as he entered through blue curtains, he knew right away that there was someone in the hot springs. In one of the cubbies, there was a neat yukata and slippers underneath the garment. It must be Sho, he assumes. After taking off his clothes and putting a towel over his manly parts, Ohno immediately sunk himself in the hot springs. Oh god, it felt so nice. If Nino hasn’t gone yet, maybe he’ll ask him to hang out.
The springs had rocks in the middle so Ohno couldn’t see the other side. It was also foggy as hell in there so he could barely see. But since their school picked an onsen near the mountains, the springs was an open bath and they could see the landscape. It looked so beautiful, Ohno sighs, with the mountains looking like a silhouette under the moonlight. Now Nino definitely has to see this. Ohno couldn’t help but sigh as he stared longer at the mountains that he began to sing without knowing he did it. At his second verse, he heard a splash, and someone whispering in a terrified voice, “Who’s there?”
“Sho-san? Is that you?” Ohno squints his eyes towards the rocks in the middle of the springs. “Are you behind the rocks? Cause I can hear your voice ricochet off from it.”
The voice coughed. “Uh. No, I’m not.”
Ohno laughed. He somehow found this amusing since the student was denying his own name. “I know it’s you, Sho-san.”
There was a minute of silence, until finally, Sho himself appeared from behind the rocks. Ohno couldn’t help but notice the red tinge on the student’s cheeks. “Ok, so it’s me. What, are you going to tell on me now?”
“No,” Ohno hummed. “I’ve come here to relax.”
Sho eyed him suspiciously. “Did you really? Or did your clingy self come to find me?”
“Ok, fine. I came to find you,” He admitted, feeling unashamed whatsoever. “I just wanted to know if you were ok.”
“I don’t need your worry,” Sho snapped, the red tinge on his face glowing brighter. Was it the steam that caused it? “You already found me so you can go back. I--”
“I’m sorry.” There he said it. He finally said it after all those years, for being the reason why Sho was tormented his whole life by students.
“Sorry for what?”
“For being a bully.”
Sho looked at him with surprise. “I was only trying to make you feel bad that day cause I was angry. I really didn’t mean to--”
“No, it was my fault, Sho-san. I’m the reason why everyone started to make your life worse since preschool.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Remember back in preschool when--”
Ohno didn’t have to explain. By the look of anger and sadness in his eyes, he knew Sho was aware of what he was about to bring up. Though surprisingly, it went away in a flash.
“Oh, you didn’t have to apologize... I already got over it...”
“No, I have to,” Ohno countered. “Your childhood must have been ugly because of me.”
“It...” Sho paused and moved closer so he was facing Ohno. “... it wasn’t your fault. My life already sucked, and-- What?”
He knows, that at this moment, it was wrong to smile. But he couldn’t help it. The student, who was in fact very crabby this morning, spoke in such a soft tone. He never heard him speak that way until now, and he was glad he got up to search for him. “Nothing,” Ohno replied, the grin still on his face.
“What’s so funny?” Sho asks, looking more irritated now. “Is this-- Are you playing a joke right now?!”
“No,” Ohno’s grin grew wider, “I’ve never seen this side of you, Sho-san. You’re more -- how should I say it... -- calm? I’ve always thought you were on the edge, or something.”
Sho turned away, but Ohno was quick enough to see a smile form on his face. “I... I don’t know what you’re talking about,” The latter says.
“And don’t hide you smile, Sho-san. It’s very nice on you.”
“I-- Thank you...”
Ohno beamed. “You’re welcome!”
“It’s not that. I meant after the party. I heard you beat up those guys... I was meant to say thanks, but I was too scared.”
“Don’t be. I won’t bite,” Ohno reassures him. “Not to brag, but I’m one of Nino’s ‘nicer’ friend.”
“I can see that...”
Ohno sighed as he leaned back on the cool edge. “It’s a cool night, isn’t it Sho-san.”
“Yeah... it is.”
“Now tell me a story, anything. I want to learn more about you.”
Sho looked hesitant at first, but he eventually gave in. He probably couldn’t stand the silence in between them. At least he finally got Sho to warm up to him.
