(Universe and You - 10) “You sure you’re okay with this?” he asks, fingers fiddling against the Fijan’s collarbones, settling them on the Fijan’s jaw to feel the way his lover’s skin warms under his hand.
The silence that follows breaks his heart a little, but he knows better than to dwell on it further; he’s certain Sammy is not having second thoughts, far from it, but he’s sure the alien’s silence has something to do with him too.
“We don’t have to go through with it if you’re not comfortable,” he says, thumbing the Fijan’s cheek softly, marveling on how easier it is for him to return the alien’s affection knowing he’s not the only one. Somehow, it doesn’t matter that they barely know each other; it honestly feels like the opposite, really, and he’s glad that everything worked out for the best despite his reservations in the beginning.
“Sammy?” he prompts the alien with a little nudge, heart skipping pleasantly at the way the Fijan’s eyes focuses on him as if on cue. He smiles and leans in before he realizes what he is doing, pressing his mouth against the Fijan’s own.
“Just say you don’t want this and we won’t go through with it,” he whispers, still mostly against the alien’s lips. “It’s okay. I promise I won’t get angry. We don’t have to do this if you think -“
“It’s not that,” Sammy says, cutting him off quickly. “I’m just - I’m actually worried you’re the one who wouldn’t want this to happen.”
He frowns at the answer, seriously confused. “And why the hell would you think that?”
“I - Well, I thought you’d want to go back home at some point,” the Fijan whispers, this time avoiding his eyes entirely. “Alone.”
Understanding dawns on him like a straight punch to the gut.
“Y-You - You honestly thought I’d want that? After everything that happened? After the kids happened? Are you stupid?”
The Fijan remains quiet. “Fijan, look at me. Look at me and tell me you didn’t honestly think I would do that to our children, Jesus.”
“Kazu - “
“I need to hear you say it, Fijan,” he says, frustrated and equal-parts hurt. “Because, seriously -“
“You didn’t want any of this before,” the alien points out, with feelings, pulling away just the slightest bit that the tiny distance feels so huge he could barely stand it. “And - And I know I cheated, broke your trust when I did the procedure on you without asking you first. It’s all my fault, I know, because I’m selfish and I didn’t think about the consequences of my actions until I realize how much I want you to stay.”
“Sammy -“
“I know what this human marriage means, okay? The Federation handbook didn’t mention it directly but I know it’s as much a binding agreement as it is a requirement, and I, for one, don’t have any plans on tying you down when we both know you hate the idea. All of this means more to me, even if you don’t know it. You mean so much to me, Kazu; the kids are just added bonus, of course, and maybe I haven’t told you this before but I’m certain there’s a reason why the procedure only worked on you. Why the markings appeared on your arm too when I said them out loud in your presence.”
“Fijan, will you shut your mouth for a second and let me talk?” he snaps, tugging the alien back roughly with his arms around the Fijan’s waist to keep him in place.
The alien’s eyes are solemn they look almost pained it makes his heart ache in the worst possible ways.
“You know what this marriage means, Kazu,” the Fijan says, before he could even say anything. “Permanence. It means you can’t go anywhere without me or the children, are you sure you’re okay with it?”
He chuckles, barely giving the Fijan any chance to say anymore as he pushes himself forward, resting his forehead against the Fijan’s own as he holds on to him tight.
“Yes,” he says, grinning. “I honestly have no qualms about being tied to you forever, or the kids for that matter, if you know what I’m saying. So quit the worrying and let’s get out of here before the Captain decides to break the door.” He says.
He’s about to pull away when the Fijan pulls him back, kisses him soft and sweet and strokes his cheek.
“I love you, I hope you know that.” The Fijan says.
Nino grins, elated. “Well, I guess I do now, Fijan. And, well, if it means anything to you, I think I love you too. A lot. Probably why I’m marrying you, right? So, let’s go?”
“Let’s.”
