The tension was making him twitchy and he swore, seeing the look on their Leader’s face, that he didn’t like where this was going.
He exchanged glances with Jun and Sho, but it was evident in the way the other two regarded him with identical frowns told him they, too, have no idea what was happening. Though judging with how the news of a rare but deadly disease targeting the vampires, it was not that hard to guess.
“We need people, preferably those who are expert on this kind of thing, to figure out what exactly we’re dealing with,” Higayashima-san said, directing his gaze on Ohno.
Next to him, Sho flinched; Jun did nothing but he was certain the wheels in Jun’s head turning, knowing exactly what the Leader of all vampires meant.
“I’ll check within our ranks,” he said, already backing off from whatever it was his Commander was subtly asking from him. He had no intention of going back there knowing he was only bringing trouble wherever he went, and the last thing he wanted was to endanger the lives of those mortals who meant the world to him because of his selfishness.
“I’m sure there should be one of us who have at least a background in medicine or something that we could -“ he said, or at least started to but Higayashima-san was quick to cut him off.
“As you can see, we’re already running out of time,” the older vampire said, his eyes cold and his tone firm, unrelenting. “and we no longer have the luxury of pinpointing who knows what when we’re in the brink of extinction!”
“Our people are dying, Ohno, and it’s up to us to figure out how to stop this disease,” Higayashima-san followed, not giving Ohno the chance to preempt him. “We both know there are mortals all over this nation who are capable of figuring out what this disease is and how to treat it. If you have to compel all of them to make them do the work for us, do it!”
Sho and Jun both whipped their heads around to gape Higayashima-san, before their gazes landed on Ohno’s face. The expression on their faces told Ohno about the same thing Ohno had been trying his hardest not to disclose, but it was getting frustratingly difficult.
Somehow, Ohno knew who Higayashima-san was talking about. He was certain that the vampire Leader had an inkling about Ohno’s association with one of the most prominent figure in the PED in Japan and that was why he was the one who’d been summoned to the job.
That person being Aiba Masaki.
And summoning Aiba - whether he did it peacefully or not - would require him to bump into Nino at some point.
And that was one thing he had been trying to avoid for the last couple of months since the incident involving Nino in Singapore.
He swore it took him all of his reserved courage not to show up on Nino’s door after the fifth time he almost lost Nino, promising he’d leave Nino alone if it meant keeping Nino safe. He was certain he’d broken both their hearts for what he did, but he had no other choice but to do it. He couldn’t bear the thought of turning Nino into a bloodsucker like him just to keep him, and staying with him when Ohno have enemies everywhere felt like he was personally doing his enemies a favor by aiming a dagger to Nino’s heart.
“I’m not denying that I know a few mortals who could help us but, Sir, I - I don’t think it’s possible to go back to talk to them. I mean, I -“
“If you need to knock on their doors with your dick out, then do it!” his Leader said with conviction before Ohno was able to say anything more. His jaw twitched, balling his fists to his side to keep himself talking.
“This disease needs to be stopped and if we have to sacrifice a few mortals to get it done, we will.” The older vampire said.
“Is that clear?”
The three of them bowed their heads, in respect and in agreement.
“Yes, Sire.”
“Go.”
