“Here you go,” Doctor Kishimoto said as she handed over the letter she prepared for Nino. Nino accepted it with as much humility as he could muster, bowing his head low and unsure of what he should say next when he straightened up to face her again. Their eyes meet for probably the fiftieth time since he came here to see her and for a moment, he couldn’t speak.

To be honest, he still couldn’t believe it. He spent the entirety of their talk staring at her and wondering how in hell it was even possible to see her in his dream when he never even met her before now.

“I’ve added the copy of my last diagnosis so whoever asks, just show them that.” she said.

He cleared his throat rather noisily as he smiled at her. “I really…d-don’t know how to thank you.” he croaked. “So if there’s anything, anything at all that you need, just tell me and I swear I’ll do everything I can to make it happen.”

She simply shook her head at him, but her following grin made it difficult to think if he somehow said something inappropriate, especially when she started talking.

“Well, actually, there is something…“

The entire chopper ride from Fukui Hospital to Keio felt like it was the longest trip Nino had to take in his life. He was fidgeting all throughout the journey, in anticipation and something else he wasn’t entirely sure, only marginally glad that his bandmates were, as always, the most effective forms of distraction, calling Nino every other damn minute just to check where he was.

He’d barely put his feet down the concrete floor of Keio University Hospital’s rooftop minutes after they landed when his phone vibrated in his pocket yet again. Clutching the letter he got from the kind doctor close to his chest, he fished around for his phone and slapped it against his left ear not bothering checking who was calling.

Unsurprisingly, it was Jun. Again. “We just landed,” he said, once Jun was done with his usual, “Are you here yet?”, and nodded at Shino-san who glanced back to point at their unexpected companions.

There were at least half a dozen uniformed men there, standing on alert, and a couple more barricading the nearest Exit door. Nino felt vaguely like he did something wrong even though he was sure he hadn’t done any.

“What do you mean am I here yet? Where exactly are you anyway?” he asked belatedly, and bowed a little when a pair from the group stepped forward and gestured for him and Shino-san towards the direction of the door.

“We’re here at the hospital,”

He blinked; he really, really had a bad feeling about this. “Which hospital?”

“Keio,” Jun said.

He was sure he had a half a dozen curses all ready to scurry out of his mouth, thankfully he was with the company of people whom he was pretty certain wouldn’t appreciate him cursing all over the place no matter his reasons were.

He gripped his phone tighter and hissed. “What? How in hell did you know I was going here? I don’t remember telling you anything about -“

“Well, I sort-of talked to Shino-san a while back and I kind of asked him where -“

“You mean you threatened him!” he grunted, knowing full well how convincing Jun could be if he wanted to. “I thought I told you I was going to call you once I have news?!”

“Well we decided we can’t wait any longer, so deal with it.”

He very well wanted to refute that, tell Jun he had the worst timing ever but instead settled on, “So if you’re already here, what are you still calling me for?”

“They won’t let us in,” Jun said, sounding more than a little pissed that Nino couldn’t help but imagine how damn scary he looked right now. “We told them who we are and even went as far as showing them our faces but the security guys at the front didn’t even budge. Sho-san even called his professor back when he was in college hoping he could get us in but even that didn’t work. We made it till the nurse’s station but when we inquired about this particular patient who had been transferred here from Fukui, they shooed us out.”

He grinned. So the lady doctor wasn’t kidding. She made particularly clear that the security at this hospital was topnotch, thus her decision to transfer the patient here wasn’t at all uncalled for. She said she didn’t want to risk her patient’s well-being just because he hadn’t stayed conscious for more than a couple of minutes, or long enough to inform his attending physician who he was and who the hospital should be contacting to inform him of his whereabouts.

“His face was already a dead giveaway,” she had told him straight-faced after she had handed over the letter Nino would bring with him, “I swear to you that my wife almost suffered a conniption when I told her who my patient was. Of course she didn’t believe me at first but then she asked me to describe his fingers and I swear to you she ended up sobbing in my arms the second after I described how they looked like. She even wanted me to take a picture, as evidence to prove that I’m not joking, that silly woman.” to this, Nino had found himself opening his mouth to say something, anything, but she immediately cut him off with a curt, “Don’t worry, I didn’t. I love her with all my heart but I’m not that stupid to do something that might cost me my career just because my wife wanted evidence.” She had said then, her gaze zeroing in on Nino.

“I couldn’t possibly give it to her but…” she paused and the sly smile that graced her lips reminded Nino strongly of his mother, it was scary. “You can, can’t you?” she asked, to which Nino found nodding his head in agreement.

After all, what were a few snapshots anyway in compared to the fact that this doctor saved someone’s life? They were nothing, and Nino promised her a few good shots himself, sent personally to her phone, but only once he was sure that her patient was the same person Nino had been looking for.

“See it for yourself to believe it,” she had told her, confidently, as she shook his hand, grinning as he told her, “Oh, I fully intend to, Sensei.”

“Nino? Are you still there?” Jun’s voice prompted him just as Shino-san waved at him from the door leading to God-knows-what and pointing at the MOBILE PHONES ARE PROHIBITED notice in big, bold letters plastered on the wall next to the door.

“Yeah,” he said, nodding at Shino-san. “But not for long. I have to go, Jun. I promise I’m going to give you a call once I have news. Bye.” He said and hung up before Jun could even voice out his protests.

Nino’s heart was racing.

He could feel its thunderous beat beneath his ribcage, vibrating across his skin as he followed the doctor’s lead. Shino-san had been requested to stay outside, along with the half-dozen security personnel crowding the entrance door while Nino was led into a separate changing room where he was asked to put on a pair of hospital robe and a face mask.

Once done, Nino was once again escorted out of the changing room and into another hallway. Halfway there, a doctor and two nurses appeared from behind a door almost at the same time the security personnel who was escorting him mumbled a stiff, “Where here,” under his breath.

“This is just a standard precautionary measure,” the doctor told him as Nino was being led into the door the doctor just came out from. From the outside, it didn’t even look like a hospital room at all. The outside interior itself looked grandly sophisticated, the walls were sculpted with elaborate spiral designs that Nino couldn’t honestly understand and were painted light-mahogany while the room’s door had some kind of unique-looking knob that Nino swore were similar to those few five-star hotels he’d been to with his bandmates.

“Anyone who wishes to visit any of our patients here is asked to do the same thing.” The doctor said. Nino honestly didn’t care what he had to go through in order to see Ohno - he’d gladly put anything on to be honest, so long as he was going to be led to where he presumed the older man was.

“It’s okay, Sensei,” he said; he’d been itching to ask the doctor how the patient was, but he didn’t know how to begin without ending up sounding like an emotional war bride. “I just… H-How is he?”

The doctor stopped in front of another door before he turned to face Nino.

“Getting better,” the doctor said with a confident tone that matched his smile. “He woke up for a few minutes a little over an hour ago when I came by for my hourly rounds to ask me if anyone has come by to visit him yet, like he knew for certain that someone was going to come. I was honestly surprised, really. He was still pretty much unconscious, after all, what with the amount of medicine he’s on but at that time, he didn’t seem like he was hallucinating or anything. I wasn’t entirely sure what made him sound so certain that someone was coming over to visit him today or how he knew about it either, because, well, you’re here now, but he did mention something about today being the tenth day, though I have no idea what he was talking about.”  The doctor said; Nino honestly felt like weeping.

“Do you know what it means?” the doctor asked as he gently pushed the door open. The doctor side-stepped then so Nino had a clear view of the bed occupying the room and the person lying on it, holding his breath and was releasing it all in one go the second his gaze focused on the familiar face, albeit the bandages and bruises, lying motionless there. His heart was pounding hard in his chest and Nino didn’t know if he wanted to laugh or cry as he started walking, crossing the short distance from the spot he was standing on to the side of the bed on shaky legs.

He was near enough that he could clearly make out the familiar face despite the bruises and the bandage wrapped around the man’s head, and Nino was mentally counting the days, the hours up until this moment, barely able to swallow the urge to reach out and touch the man’s face lying unconsciously on the bed now that Nino was close enough to see him. Nino’s unruly chest tightened with relief and affection and so many other things he had yet to put a name on, all of them washing Nino over in a rush it was overwhelming, finding the wetness trailing his cheeks before he even realized he was crying.

“Yeah,” he breathed, harsh and shaky, found himself grabbing the bed’s edge to support his wobbly feet. The ground beneath him was swaying unsteadily, and it didn’t help that his eyes were blurry with tears as he stared and stared at the person’s face, drinking the man on the bed’s presence in, hungrily.

If the doctor said anything in return, Nino didn’t know; he was no longer listening.

The clock on the wall chimed as if on cue, and Nino’s world snapped into focus as he gave the clock a curious glance. He couldn’t help it, he laughed, heartfelt though a little shaky, at the same time the man sleeping on the bed stirred. Nino watched with baited breath as the man’s eyes opened slowly, like a butterfly’s wings parting for the first time and for the life of him, Nino swore that every single hardship he had to endure during the past ten days Ohno went missing were all worth it, especially when those liquid brown eyes stared directly at Nino the moment they opened fully.

“Nino, hey,” Ohno croaked, voice raspy, scratchy; his eyes flickered to Nino’s face with certainty, without even the slightest hint of surprise that caught Nino off-guard for a moment. “You came,” Ohno said, and Nino didn’t know if he wanted to hug the other man, or punch him or kiss him. “I was waiting.”

Nino didn’t have any answer for that, couldn’t come up with anything sensible enough to counter the way Ohno had once again made his heart jump up to his throat with just those few words.

“H-Hi, Oh-chan,” Nino settled for a greeting instead despite the fact that all he wanted right then and there was to throw himself at Ohno, grateful for the way his voice had remained even despite the way that the rest of him didn’t. He was trembling all over, after all. “I - I’m…s-sorry it took me a while to get here. Tokyo traffic is the worst these past few days.” He said, half-teasing, because if didn’t, he knew he’d end up sobbing inelegantly instead.

“It’s okay,” Ohno said with a smile so beautiful it hurts, and Nino felt as if every single emotion he had in his body flickered to life the moment Ohno lifted his hand and gestured Nino to lean down for a hug. “I haven’t been waiting for long anyway. You came just in time,” Ohno said.

Nino hesitated but only for a second, as he carefully ducked down to put his arms around Ohno, his face against the dip on Ohno’s collarbone. “I did, didn’t I?” he murmured, shutting his eyes close and simply basking on the feeling of Ohno’s warm body beneath him, alive and real and here.

“Hmm,” Ohno hummed his agreement, and it was all Nino could do not to fall apart as Ohno held him close. “Did you miss me?” Ohno asked, in passing, maybe just to tease, and with all the love Nino knew he reserved only for the other man, the question, despite the simplicity of it rocked Nino to the core he was sobbing forcefully into the fabric of Ohno’s hospital robe before he even realized it.

“More than you ever know,” he cried, fingers shaking along with the rest of him, “Satoshi…I miss you so much, I miss you, please don’t ever leave me again. Please, Oh-chan…”

Ohno said nothing and Nino didn’t expect him to, but Nino felt it in the way Ohno held onto him tightly in return that despite the situation they’re in, he wasn’t the only one.
