smoking ban.

i find myself getting really pissed off with all the people in the paper making themselves out to look such twats by protesting against the smoking ban. "it's an infringement on human rights", what bollocks. to be fair, the only places that this ban really makes a difference is in pubs, bars and clubs, considering that the majority of shopping centres, public transport and resteraunts are already smoke-free. so really, you have to question the reliability of all the people making such claims about civil liberties and suchlike - i'm sure there are some out there, but personally i have not seen or heard a single non-smoker claim the ban to be against any kind of human right, myself included. at the end of the day, tobacco is a drug, the same as alcohol is - a legal one, maybe, but in just the same way that anyone drinking every single day would be classed an alcoholic, so someone who smokes every single day is an addict. funny thing, then, that the only people i've seen to protest the ban is those who fall into that category.

tobacco contains ammonia, arsenic, and formeldahyde among others, and around 600 people die every single year just from passive smoking. this ban is NOT an infringement on the human rights of those who smoke - it's standing up for the human right - to LIVE - of those who have to spend their nights out breathing in the smoke of others and subsequently causing damage to their lungs through no fault of their own. smokers, you're not losing the right to make your own choice over whether to smoke or not - smoking itself is not illegal. you're simply losing the ability to damage others through your smoking. and let's face it, if you still did have the choice of smoking in pubs and such, you wouldn't make the choice not to. those making a big hoohar over the ban, are only doing so because they are being told they can't do something they are addicted to - and only in enclosed spaces. get a fucking LIFE. you want to see how sad you look, making such a fuss over a fucking cigarette. i've even seen people comment that 'there's no proof that passive smoking is dangerous' - can you be any more dense? if smoking in itself causes cancer among loads of other diseases, then of course breathing in the smoke from others' cigarettes is going to be dangerous.

i hope they extend the ban. make it illegal for pregnant women to smoke (with an on-the-spot fine of ooh, say, £5k? you have no idea how many pregnant women i've seen smoking around this area. they should be fucking sterilised.), illegal to smoke around children, and ESPECIALLY illegal to smoke in your own house if you happen to have children living there. that would cause a massive scene - okay, it's your own house, and you should be able to do what you want in it - but not when it's endangering the lives of your own children. i'm so glad i grew up in a smokefree house. and i'm even more glad now, that i don't have to combine nights out with having smoke blown in my face, doing damage to my lungs without even choosing to, and smelling of cigarettes all night/next day. i'm not even hugely against smoking. if you want to do it, then it's your choice. i always thought i was neutral on it, actually, despite never enjoying it myself. but recently my opinion has changed... since changing my work from shops in shopping centres to those on the high street, i've noticed myself thinking (in response to all the people from the shops around us, outside for a cigarette) 'gosh, look at all these people having to take about 50mil breaks a day just to smoke - how sad.' and since i started going out regularly, i've caught myself thinking things like, 'fuck ME that guy is hot.... ahh, but he smokes >.<' or 'awh that girl shouldn't smoke.. it makes her look so unclassy and unattractive'. since then i've realised - yeah, i dislike smoking. but it's a personal choice; if you want to do it, then do it. unless, as in this case, it harms others. so, to sum up my thoughts on the loss of cigarettes in enclosed public places - good fucking riddance!
