She knows he's over there watching her. Mr. Big Shot thinks he's sneaky and clever but he ain't any more clever than any of the other crooks she's lived with. Once you travel with Mal an' Jayne, you start to learn not to let certain things get by.

Kaylee's cutting up cucumber for a salad, and she's taking out her frustration on the poor defenseless vegetable. Chop-chop CHOP. Chop-chop CHOP! It doesn't help that she knows he's watching with that grin on his face. Like he knows something she don't. She's scooping the chopped cucumber into the bowl, and moving onto tomatoes.

"Want help?" Embry calls in from the hammock. Her hammock, mind you. Kaylee rolls her eyes since she's facing away from him and then she hears him chuckle. She doesn't like that.

"I know how to chop veggies, thanks," she replies as cold as she can manage.

Kaylee'd spoken to Inara about the whole big mess, and she knew she should've found somewhere else for Embry to stay. It wouldn't be hard; not with the rest of the folks in Roanoke being as nice as they are. She just didn't want to give up, feel like she couldn't handle it. She wasn't just some sweet, weak, nice little mechanic that can't handle when things get tetchy. Kaylee could handle things just fine.

At that thought, she turned around to face her guest, holding up the knife with a tomato on the end of it and smiled. "You get all your homework done?"

"Yep," Embry replied smoothly.

"You actually been goin' to school like I said?" She would try until she got him.

"Yep." His grin was getting wider.

"An' no detentions? Mrs. Taylor told me you don't 'xactly participate all that much, 'specially in shop y'know." Kaylee raises her eyebrows.

"I'm an angel." He makes a halo above his head with his hands.

Kaylee huffs and turns back around to keep making the salad.

"You sure you don't want help?" Embry's question is answered with a chop-CHOP.

"Why don't you go look through the new clothes I got ya for school. This'll be ready soon," she replies after she calms down a little.

"Already did, and thanks." Embry says, his voice now much closer behind her than Kaylee liked. She jumps out from his enclosing arms and points the knife at him.

"You got no call comin' up on me like that, Embry! You're lucky this thing ain't stickin’ in your knee right now," she warns, only half serious. He simply looks at her until Kaylee deflates. "At least not until you graduate. Or get another birthday behind you."

Then he grins again and takes the knife to finish up the tomatoes. Kaylee's glumly aware that no matter how irritated she got, she is going to lose this battle. Least she can do is just hold out long as she can manage.
