I just got home from my last class of the quarter. Sean and Jen handed back out Visual Analysis papers. I got an A+ and a list of wonderful comments. It was great news because that paper is 25% of my grade. It was also nice to get a pat on the back as I go into my final exam study weekend.
Check out this shit! I was going over the rubric and noticed something funny in the grammar section. It listed the normal stuff (like spelling and punctuation), but it also said, “avoidance of ‘texting’ and slang language.” This is what I was thinking after reading that: “texting? Is that what they call fancy fonts… no…. I wonder if they mean..? nooooo…. No way! Like phone texting?!?!?” Do college students actually use ‘text speak’ in work they turn in for grading?
I called my English professor to clear this up for me. Jeremy gave me the frightening news that had worried about. He says that it is not uncommon for him to grade papers that have ‘text speak’ throughout.
"LOL"
":-)"
"ROFLMAO"
And more…
Crazy! It would never occur to me to even use that language in my own personal notes, let alone something that affects my grade.
