I will say this, I did sort of expect Jack to survive. I mean, if "flipping the switch" that turned the rest of humanity immortal had made him mortal, than it made sense he would switch back when it flipped again. And the fact that he was already dead didn't matter -- after all, he was already dead when he was first made immortal. Unlike the rest of humanity after MD, he always died first and then came back. He didn't just survive without necessary organs like the others. Rex's immortality SHOULD be temporary. If it came from having Jack's blood, well blood gets replaced regularly in the body. I don't know how long it takes, but once Rex's body has time enough to manufacture enough of his own blood, he should be mortal again. Of course, RTD may not take it that way. I FULLY agree with you, it wouldn't be Torchwood without Jack. And a show led by an immortal Rex would not be Torchwood. He doesn't know anything about aliens or alien technology. That show would be a kind of James Bond about an immortal CIA agent doing spy stuff with humans, NOT a show about alien hunters. And even if he was sure he would come back, I don't see Rex sacrificing himself the way Jack did. I mean, he did it in this episode, but in effect he was already doomed after getting the hole in his chest in episode 1. I don't see him behaving that way if he had an alternative. I am glad they made Jack immortal again. And I would watch Torchwood if it was Jack, Gwen and Rex (as long as Rex doesn't stay immortal). Rex doesn't have what it takes to be the leader. I mean, he would have surrendered the future of humanity to save Esther, if everyone didn't talk him out of it. He can't do the kind of things Jack has had to do (Steven comes to mind). Bottom line, I will keep watching as long as Jack is there.
And as for A New Dawn, PLEASE PLEASE give us some more!!! It has been three whole weeks! I'm dying for more!
PS: I think you would make a great TV writer. But you'd better try one of the cable networks, they would never use your stuff on the broadcast networks. Too adult for them. Try HBO or Showtime, they would like your stuff. BUT FINISH THIS STORY FIRST!!!
Gwen must have thought that Jack was permanently dead, since she was going to leave him down there.
geminia905 (below) pointed out that it wasn't Jack's blood that caused Rex's immortality it was the blessing mixing him up with Jack when Jack got his immortality back. That makes more sense than it being the blood transfusion. But it would also mean that it might not be temporary. At least it would be a one off and you wouldn't end up with hordes of immortals.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what show RTD manages to sell to a network ,to find out if it will be Jack, Gwen and Rex, the Rex and Gwen show, or even just Rex.
Only one is relevant to me.
I waited to answer all these comments until after I'd posted A New Dawn #10. Just to get it done a bit quicker.
Thank you, but you don't need to worry. I won't be ignoring A New Dawn while trying to launch a TV career. LOL. For one thing, I have great difficulty writing original characters, so it wouldn't fly. I can't empathise with them the way I do with established characters like Jack. I have enough problems with Gwen and the others. I'd also have to brush up on using consistent tenses, grammar etc etc.
