After the fight with the being who was not Mr. Phale, Millie had propped herself up against a tree till she felt up to returning to the dorms. But instead of going to her own room she'd gone to find Warren, wanting - needing - the security of someone who loved her. He'd taken her in, of course, and tucked her into his own bed, lying beside her to hold her through the night.
She had been a bit disoriented when she awoke this morning, not quite sure where she was until she was his sleeping face. And then all she'd been able to do was smile and watch him while he slept, marveling over how wonderful and amazing it all was.
Warren murmured sleepily and turned slightly, opening his eyes. He smiled when he saw Millie and remembered the events of the night before - and holding her through the night.
“Hey, you,” he said softly. “How are you feeling?”
"I am quite good," she said with her own matching smile. "Did you sleep well?"
Warren nodded, reaching to run a hand through his hair. “Yes, I slept pretty well. How about you?”
"I slept amazingly well," she said, leaning in to rest her head on his chest. "Thank you for letting me stay here. I should not have like to be alone after last night."
"Though," she said thoughtfully, "I have always been alone after difficult things in the past."
Warren held her close to him, stroking her hair. “I’m glad you came to find me last night, Millie. I wouldn’t have wanted you to be alone last night. You never have to be alone again if you don’t want to.”
"I want to be with you," she said. "I like the way I feel when I am with you." She let her fingers play with the ends of his hair.
“I like the way I feel when I’m with you, too,” he said, kissing her hair.
"Do you think Mr. Phale is all right?" she asked. "He left with the doctor, but he looked so tired and battered. Perhaps I should have seen if I could have helped to heal him."
“If you feel up to it, we could go check on him a little later, give both of you more time to rest.”
She nodded. "But right now I just want to stay here with you like this."
“We can definitely stay like this for as long as you would like to,” he assured her. “I’m in no hurry to go anywhere.”
She smiled at him. "Because you love me, though I will probably never understand why." She nuzzled in a little closer, wrapping her arms around him.
He smiled and tightened his arms around her, nuzzling her hair. “Because I love you and at some point you will understand why.”
She sighed contentedly. "I am not sure I shall ever understand why people here do things, but perhaps I do not always need to understand."
“Sometimes it’s okay not to understand,” he nodded. “There are lots of things in life I don’t understand, but there are other things that I learn a lot about.”
"And what do you like to learn about?" she asked curiously.
“Oh, I love learning about all kinds of things. I like studying beliefs of other people, other cultures. I love books and learning.”
"Perhaps I should tell you about Asheth sometime, then," she said a little sleepily.
“I’d like that,” he said softly. “But I’d like it even more if you rested some more. You had a busy and hard time of it last night.”
"You wouldn't mind if I just slept again?" she asked with a yawn. "I think between that horrible funeral thing and the Eye Red coming home and then the fighting... You don't have to stay, though. I'm sure you have things you'd rather do."
“You rest. I don’t mind holding you while you do so.” He smiled gently. “It’s been a long and busy weekend, and there is no place I would rather be right now.”
She sighed happily and closed her eyes. "Then I shall sleep again," she said. "And perhaps when I wake up we will go to the Leaf and have something to eat and see if Mr. Phale is all right."
He nodded. “I like this idea, sweetheart,” he said softly. “Get some rest and we’ll go check on him later.”
She curled in even closer and let herself drift back off to sleep. "Love you," she said softly.
“I love you, too,” Warren said softly as he closed his eyes, holding her close as she slept.
