I did 2 weeks in Japan for roughly 3.5k (also overestimate it too just in case) and out of the 3.5k ... $1,200 went to a plane ticket. I took economy, 14hr direct flight. $500~ hostel. $250~ week long JR pass (to save money on bullet train tix) and expenses like food and stuff...
you can do it for less depending on if u wanna travel to other prefectures using the bullet train and how much you spend on food and souvenirs
I think I read that prices would be more reasonable for tix if u buy them about 4 months in advance to your trip. A yr in advance would not give you a good price. But if u could get comfy business class for cheap then it Would be awesome.
The two hostels I picked were really clean and modern. Guess you'll have to research and pick wisely if u wanna save money on that. There was one night in Yokohama at a hostel after a live that was unplanned ... It was creepy.
Both hostels I picked were non smoking I think. Didn't have a problem and didn't see any smoking inside. I can give u the name of a really nice one in Kyoto if u want.
Are there some where you get your own place to stay? I've always thought they were where you got like a cot in a room with a lot of other people--and then if one of those people has been smoking and comes in, brings that with them, or if it's just on their clothes so heavily--then I'm gonna have to leave, so that sounded bad--but I think I heard differently yesterday that you kinda get a room?
I don't have allergies, so take this with a grain of salt, but I often stay at Toyoko Inn, which is a chain of business hotels with non smoking rooms. They've always been clean and not-smoke-smelling, and I think they generally have English speaking staff that you could explain things to.
As long as they've not been smoked in, and there's not a bad mold problem, I'm okay on a log, tbh. Just heard some bad stuff from my Aunt on the cheap option hotels she's stayed in, and them making her sick because of mold (with the humidity, I'm surprised everything wasn't covered in it XD) so it made me a little afraid. And then there was the fun thing where if too many people check in before you, you may not have the same room you booked because they over book the rooms and then just put you somewhere else-_-; (thankfully our only issue was getting a king sized bed rather than two twins, so that wasn't a problem, and we got to the other ones super early. Just surprised me that they would do that)
I'm considering moving my entire schedule around, and foregoing an internship. I can't look at that till I get back to my apartment, though, but I'm graduating in Summer next year, so I don't have the room for much moving--and I'm not graduating any later than I already am

Ai yi yi, those internship choices sound really blegh. Except the one for last year you mentioned, with a pension and company car and WHOA. I'm just shocked nobody else snapped it up. Sure, moving sucks, but across state is so near compared to where a lot of people end up . . . like across country.
Yay that it's possible, though! We'll keep fingers crossed.
Ai yi yi, that's really rough that you had an allergy to oats and had to eat them on top of all the other stuff that bothered you. That would probably make me cry buckets.

Their pillows are pretty stiff though.
Also Tripadvisor allows you to search "non smoking hotel" if you check the box under "Amenities".

Oh, wow, it takes you weeks to get over a reaction to food? That is rough. :(
