According to various Japanese media outlets GACKT reportedly has committed to competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics, which are taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The discipline should come as no surprise; snowboarding!
According to Sanspo who first broke the news on their website, GACKT is focusing on the snowboard slopestyle event for men, which was newly introduced as an Olympic snowboarding discipline in Sochi. The sport's goal is to perform a series of difficult tricks while going down specially designed trails that are filled with jumps and other obstacles.
GACKT was inspired by famous violinist Vanessa-Mae who competed in alpine skiing for Thailand at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, but things got serious after he spoke to Olympic champions like Sage Kotsenburg at the BIG AIR snowboarding event in Sapporo a few weeks ago. He got in touch with Kotsenburg's coach and the two have reportedly set up an intense training regimen for the coming winters, including appearances at important qualifying events leading up to the Games in 2018.
GACKT himself was unavailable for comment as of right now, but we are sure more news is forthcoming!
