You Wake Me Up

So, i'm sorta going to steal this exercise from Becky. Most influential books in my life go!

1. Harry Potter 1, 2 and 3 -- I worshiped these books when I was in 5th grade. They definitely had an influence during the most influential time in my life.
2. Atlas Shrugged -- The first time I really enjoyed a book despite disagreeing with the overall message. It helped me see things in a different way.
3. Moby Dick -- Was brought to life by Mr. Clark. I learned so much in this class, and was challenged for the first time.
4. A Short History of Nearly Everything -- Bill Bryson is amazing. Thank you to Jon for introducing this book to me, as well as Bill Bryson. At least I think it might have been Jon. Either way, it helped to pave the way for non-fiction for me.
5. His Dark Materials -- Phillip Pullman. Everyone talks about the golden compass, but I think one cannot stand alone with this one.
6. Lord of the Rings -- this was influential for a different reason. Something I thought I should have liked, but didn't like that much. I think I might have pretended for too long. Taught me that all things that are heralded as good aren't necessarily something you have to like.
7. Sophie's Choice -- I used a lot of the knowledge I learned in this book in subsequent classes in college. It was remarkable what I learned at such a young age and how it continued to apply. Thank you Mr. Glynn.
8. The Old Testament -- I connect with the Old Testament in a really interesting way. I can't really explain it. I've read all of it once and then parts of it again for Honors. I can't shake it.
9. Fifty Shades of Grey -- Yup. Maybe this should be Letters to the Penthouse. Either way, it helped me get over my need for snobby books. And erotica is terrible, yet awesome?
10. Lean In -- Yeah, I know, I know. But it really did help me realize that we're not done yet. it also helped me create an image of modern feminism; which is one where I can still shave my legs and wear cute clothes and lead the world. We always think about the way that men mistreat us, but we never consider how we shortchange ourselves.

Runner up: Dante's inferno -- looking forward to being buffeted around in hell while I can't ever reach Bradley. But seriously, some cool ass heck imagery.
