I had a 2 pm appointment today to show one of my rental properties. I was early and they were late, as is so often the case on these things. I slipped into a parking spot on the side of the road across from my property, and turning the heat up just a bit let my head fall back against the headrest. I was tired, am tired, and my eyes felt heavy. I closed them and scooched down in my seat a little, getting myself into a slightly more reclining position. It's a Fool's April sort of day here in Ohio - gray and bleak and damp. The rain was pattering on the roof in a not quite rhythmic way that left me halfway between soothed and certain a carjacker was just outside my window. I flicked the locks to locked and started to drift off. They can have the car if they want it badly enough to wake me up for it.
It was a perfect doze. The sort where you don't relax so much your neck muscles go all limp, leaving you drooling onto your own breastbone, or concussing yourself against the window as your head collapses to one side under its own weight. The kind where you are just ever so slightly under the skin of the world, aware of it but not, asleep but not, in a place where muzzy dreams follow you upward, looking out through your own slitted eyes at your waking life. Mostly they slide back down with you too, but sometimes.....
::RIIIIIIIINNNNNG:: goes the cell phone. A perfect doze ruined. Damn.
